As a series of study for an anti-gout agent, two flavan-3-ols have been isolated from Oolong tea. They showed positive reaction in solution and , which were able to be confirmed in TLC with dimeric flavan-3-ols. The components were identified as procyanidin B-2 and procyanidin B-2-O-3, 3'-di-gallate by spectroscopic analysis. Their inhibitory effect on xanthine oxidase was also investigated and procyanidin B-2-O-3, 3'-digallate showed 60.6% inhibition at . The compound competitively inhibited the xantine oxidase and dimeric flavan-3-ols contanining gallate had higher inhibition activity.

Tuberculosis is the second cause of death from infectious disease. The resurgence of tuberculosis and the increase in mycobacterial infections, as well as the multidrug-resistance of these bacteria to available antibiotics, has encouraged research on new antimycobacterial agents. In this context, water and soil samples from different Moroccan biotopes have led to the isolation of a bacterial strain, capable of inhibiting mycobacterial growth (Mycobacterium smegmatis MC2 155 and Mycobacterium aur...

Tuberculosis (TB) is the principal cause of death worldwide due to an infectious agent, Mycobacterium tuberculosis . The search for new anti-TB drugs, especially from plants, is needed due to the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR), extensively drug-resistant (XDR) strains and nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM). The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimycobacterial activity of the white poplar tree ( Populus alba L.). The incorporation of aqueous and ethanol extracts into the agar medium...

Cistus albidus and Cistus salvifolius, two species of the family Cistaceae, are common in the Mediterranean Basin. They have therapeutic properties. In this study, the antimycobacterial activity of these two species is evaluated. The incorporation of aqueous and ethanol extracts in the agar medium, disk diffusion method and minimal inhibitory concentration assay have shown that extracts of both plants have an antimycobacterial effect. The fractions responsible for the observed activity were iden...

Ionizing radiation can be used to improve the color of green tea extract to brighter. As a result, the irradiated green tea extract can be applied easier and broader in food or cosmetic industry. To confirm the retention of the biological activities of the cosmetic products added with green tea polyphenols (PPs), the real cosmetic products including a skin lotion (PS) and an essence (PE) cream were manufactured. Irradiation also applied to the manufactured cosmetic products to see their improvem...

Food irradiation has been recognized as a reliable and safe method for the preservation of food and for improving the hygienic quality and nutritional value of food. In addition to the control of microorganisms of numerous food commodities, ionizing irradiation can be used to reduce several carcinogenic agents and antinutritional factors, such as gossypol and trypsin and tannin inhibitors. In addition, irradiation has also been used in the drying procedure of food commodities and in the developm...

The antimicrobial activity of tea (Camellia sinensis) flavonoids against selected foodborne pathogens, Escherichia coli 0157:H7 and Listeria monocytogenes was studied. Flavonoid, hydrolysed flavonoid, flavanol and crude catechin were extracted from fresh and dried tea leaf samples. The activities of each extract on both pathogens were tested using paper disc diffusion method. Extracts producing inhibition zone of more than 8.0 mm were further investigated to determine their minimum inhibitory co...

Abstract To investigate the naturally occurring angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor, broccoli ( Brassica oleracea Italica ) extracts were used for its isolation and identification. After treatment with 50% acetone for membrane breakdown, ethyl acetate, n -butanol, and water were used for the preparation of broccoli extracts. The water-soluble extract from broccoli had 76.9% ACE inhibitory activity, while those of other organic solvent extracts showed lower ACE inhibitory activities. ...

Polyphenols of green tea leaf were separated and irradiated at 40 kGy to investigate the effect of irradiation on changes of biological and anti-microbial activities. The major antioxidative activities, including electron donating, inhibition of xanthine oxidase, metal ion chelating, and inhibition of lipid oxidation were maintained through irradiation, except for superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity at the 200 ppm level. The anti-microbial activities against Staphylococcus aureus and Strept...

To evaluate the school lunch program served by elementary schools in Muan, Korea, we examined children's preference for the dishes offered on the menus. School lunch program menus showing the food composition of 400 meals (100 meals in each season) were collected. The serving frequency of each dish on the menus was counted. Eighty-seven representative dishes were selected based on the serving frequency and preference for each dish was determined by a survey of 414 elementary school students who ...
