Abstract
Vegetable oil is one of the principal sources of minor bioactive substances such as tocopherol, phytosterol, and squalene. In order to obtain the distribution of these substances in vegetable oil, this study developed and validated high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) method for the simultaneous analysis of tocopherols (α-, β-, γ-, and δ-tocopherol), phytosterols (β-sitosterol, stigmasterol, brassicasterol, and campesterol), and squalene in vegetable oils. An automatic gel permeation chromatography (GPC) system was used to remove triglycerides from oils, avoiding the heat treatment of traditional saponification. Method validation revealed the accuracy and reliability of this method. The current approach achieved the successful separation of β- and γ-tocopherol, which solved the problem of coelution and inaccurate quantification for β- and γ-tocopherol in previous study. Additionally, this method was applied to detect tocopherols, phytosterols, and squalene in 9 categories of vegetable oils.

Abstract In this study, purified rice bran oil (RBO) was used as a lipid matrix model to study the individual and binary antioxidant capacity of the minor constituents (α-tocopherol, γ-oryzanol and phytosterol) added at different concentrations and ratios. The results revealed that concentration influenced on the oxidation stability and scavenging capacity, while ratio mainly affected the type of interaction or the degree of synergism or antagonism. It was important to notice that the antioxidan...

The aim of this study was to explore the protective effects of squalene supplementation on growth performance, oxidative status, and liver function of diquat-challenged broilers. One hundred forty-four 1-day-old male Ross 308 broiler chicks were allocated to 3 groups, and each group consisted of 6 replicates of 8 birds each. The three groups were as follows: 1) nonchallenged broilers fed with a basal diet (control group), 2) diquat-challenged broilers fed a basal diet, and 3) diquat-challenged b...

Abstract Phytosterols are a group of sterols exclusive to plants and fungi, but are indispensable to humans because of their medicinal and nutritional values. However, current raw materials used for phytosterols extraction add to the cost and waste in the process. For higher sterols production, major attention is drawn to plant materials abundant in phytosterols and genetic modification. To provide an insight into phytosterols metabolism, the research progress on key enzymes involved in phytoste...

: As an intermediate metabolite during the biosynthesis of sterols, squalene is found ubiquitously in plants and animals. In rice, squalene is contained in rice bran, and consequently, squalene in rice bran oil has gained attention. Studies have shown that the intake of squalene from food sources demonstrate various physiological benefits such as the prevention of cancer and cardiovascular disease. Squalene is also known as an effective antioxidant in edible oils. However, due to its chemical st...

Abstract Phytosterols have been extensively studied because it plays essential roles in the physiology of plants and can be used as nutritional supplement to promote human health. We use a rapid method by coupling near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and chemometric techniques to quickly and efficiently determine three essential phytosterols (β-sitosterol, campesterol and stigmasterol) in vegetable oils. Continuous wavelet transform (CWT) method was adopted to remove the baseline shift in the spect...

Abstract In this study, a simultaneous analytical method of tocols, γ-oryzanols, phytosterols, squalene, cholecalciferol and phylloquinone were developed using HPLC-DAD-FLD. The developed method allowed the quantification of 18 compounds in 30 min. Method validation showed linearity of calibration curves (α = 0.05). RSD of intra-day, inter-day and inter-laboratory precision were less than 4.88%. The limit of detections (LODs) and limit of quantifications (LOQs) were low (0.009–2.166 μg g −1 ) wi...

Abstract Characterization of high molecular weight hydrocarbon mixtures such as heavy oil, bitumen, and vacuum residue is essential to design and optimization of the recovery, upgrading, and transportation processes. Characterization provides information about the boiling point and molecular weight distributions. To obtain these information, developing the simple, fast, and consistent characterization method is needed. In this work, for the first time, we combine Gel Permeation Chromatography (G...

Abstract In this study, a new method for extracting and isolating squalene from pumpkin seed oil was developed using magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). The inhibition effect of extracted squalene on angiogenesis was investigated in chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM). Squalene extraction from pumpkin seed oil was performed in two steps: fatty acids (FAs) separation via hydrothermal adsorption on the magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and squalene extraction using solvent extraction method at differe...

: Squalene is a triterpenic compound found in a large number of plants and other sources with a long tradition of research since it was first reported in 1926. Herein a systematic review of studies concerning squalene published in the last 8 years is presented. These studies have provided further support for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-atherosclerotic properties in vivo and in vitro. Moreover, an antineoplastic effect in nutrigenetic-type treatments, which depends on the failing...

Abstract Carotenoids and tocopherols were characterised in the meso- and exocarp of wild-growing Costa Rican Acrocomia aculeata fruits. Comprehensive profiling of these lipophilic micronutrients in fruits of three varying maturity stages was conducted for the first time. A method for the simultaneous extraction and quantitation of carotenoids and α-tocopherol was developed and validated. Detailed HPLC-DAD-APCI/ESI-MS n analyses enabled the identification of α-tocopherol and 25 carotenoids. The l...

Abstract null null Trans fatty acids (TFAs), associated with the risks of coronary heart disease and diabetes, are formed by isomerization of unsaturated fatty acids during refining of linseed oils. In this study, TFAs and the chemical characteristics (acid value, peroxide value, carbonyl compounds, bioactive minor components and fatty acids) in 32 commercial linseed oils were investigated, and the correlation among them were further analyzed. Results showed that C18:3 TFAs were predominant TFAs...
