Abstract
Abstract This paper reported the fabrication of optical glass micro-lens array (MLA) by using contactless micro-embossing technology. Firstly, the micro-hole array in the tungsten carbide (WC) substrate was made by the micro-electrical discharge machining (micro-EDM). Then, to improve the oxidation resistance, anti-sticking properties and chemical inertness of mold surface, Cr-W-N coating was deposited on the mold insert by plasma-enhanced sputtering technique. Finally, controllable MLA were fabricated with the coated EDM-mold by using the precision glass molding machine from Shenzhen University (SZU’s PGMM30). The surface roughness, three-dimensional morphology and optical performance of glass MLA were measured by ContourGT-X 3D optical profiler, ultraviolet spectrophotometer, and optical imaging system, respectively. The experimental results indicated that the contactless hot embossing process has the capability of fabricating high-quality and multi-scale glass MLA. This work provides an effective method for the fabrication of optical glass MLA.

Abstract In the partial-filling hot embossing process (PFHE), the stress distribution and geometry of a glass micro-lens influence its optical performance. The deformation behavior of glass is very complex during PFHE. In order to investigate the final shape and stress distribution of glass micro-lens during PFHE, both simulations and experiments were conducted. The experiment results revealed that different glass squeeze flow conditions gave rise to various cavity filling modes, including singl...

Abstract The CrWN glass molding coating was synthesized by plasma enhanced magnetron sputtering (PEMS). The effect of annealing environment (e.g., vacuum, N2 and Air) on the microstructure and mechanical property of as-deposited coating was investigated by the X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM) and nanoindentation tests. Results showed that the as-deposited coating exhibited dense columnar structure c...

Abstract Magneto-optical glass is a category of optical materials. In this study, a series of Tb3+ doped Ga2O3–B2O3–SiO2–GeO2 (GBSG) glasses were prepared and studied. Through the density test, it was found that the structure of the magneto-optical glass tended to be dense. At the same time, the result of infrared spectrum shows that some changes happened to the structure of the sample with different Tb3 + concentration, resulting in the change of the density of the magneto-optical glass. The wa...

The hot embossing needs the heat preservation for precision micro-forming, thus leading to inefficiency. A hot embossing of polymer micro-arch lens array in half molten is proposed for the application of light guide plate (LGP). It only performs a thermal deformation for micron-scale surface layer to be squeezed into core microgrooves. First, the micro-optic illumination of LGP was analyzed to design the micro-arch lens array; then the micro-grinding was employed to machine smooth microgrooves o...

Machining of critical components such as turbine compressor and pump parts is required to generate compressive residual stress on the surface layer in order to obtain high fatigue life. As an effective method to generate and improve the compressive residual stress of machined parts, burnishing has been widely used in industry. Despite its importance, few studies have investigated the mechanism of burnishing on surface residual stress. In this paper, the interference effects due to nearby burnish...

Abrasive air-jet (AAJ) micromachining has become an attractive technology for the fabrication of micro-structures on a wide range of engineering materials. However, problems specific to effective mould construction still remain challenging. This paper presents a study on the evolution of micro and blind holes on glass during abrasive air-jet machining. Experiments were conducted under different practical settings of air pressure, particle mass flow rate and drilling time. A 3D laser measurement ...

Carbon’s unique ability to have both sp 2 and sp 3 bonding states gives rise to a range of physical attributes, including excellent mechanical and electrical properties. We show that a series of lightweight, ultrastrong, hard, elastic, and conductive carbons are recovered after compressing sp 2 -hybridized glassy carbon at various temperatures. Compression induces the local buckling of graphene sheets through sp 3 nodes to form interpenetrating graphene networks with long-range disorder and shor...

Abstract A series of experiments were carried out to investigate polymer recovery in the micro hot embossing process. Above the glass transition temperature ( Tg ), polymer deformation becomes much easier and complete filling of microcavities is generally not difficult to achieve. One of the problems restricting replication efficiency of the hot embossing technique is polymer recovery. After complete filling, if without timely cooling, large recovery may happen and lead to defective embossing re...

Micro/nano-precision glass molding (MNPGM) is an efficient approach for manufacturing micro/nanostructured glass components with intricate geometry and a high-quality optical finish. In MNPGM, the mold, which directly imprints the desired pattern on the glass substrate, is a key component. To date, a wide variety of mold inserts have been utilized in MNPGM. The aim of this article is to review the latest advances in molds for MNPGM and their fabrication methods. Surface finishing is specifically...

In injection molding, the temperature control of the dynamic mold is an excellent method for improving the melt flow length, especially of thin-wall products. In this study, the heating efficiency of a novel heating strategy based on induction heating was estimated. With the use of this heating strategy, a molding cycle time similar to the traditional injection molding process could be maintained. In addition, this strategy makes it easier to carry out the heating step due to the separation of t...

In thin wall injection molding, the filling of plastic material into the cavity will be restricted by the frozen layer due to the quick cooling of the hot melt when it contacts with the lower temperature surface of the cavity. This problem is heightened in composite material, which has a higher viscosity than pure plastic. In this paper, to reduce the frozen layer as well as improve the filling ability of polyamide 6 reinforced with 30 wt.% glass fiber (PA6/GF30%) in the thin wall injection mold...

Abstract High-precision aspheric negative plastic lenses are widely used in optical systems owing to their excellent performance and ease of high-efficiency manufacturing. The imaging performance of the lens is difficult to control, because it is unable to perform optical measurements directly and is sensitive to manufacturing processing meanwhile. Generally, the imaging performance is guaranteed by a strict control of geometrical deviation, such as Peak-to-Valley (PV) and Root-Mean-Square (RMS)...
