Abstract Bladder is affected by numerous pathologies which require augmentation or replacement of the organ. Currently, the gold standard is enterocystoplasty which causes many complications. Bioengineering techniques propose options to overcome these issues. The innovative and very simple tissue engineered three-dimensional spherical bladder model reported here mimics the bladder natural shape using collagen-derived scaffold. Bladder mesenchymal cells were embedded inside the scaffold and epith...

: The central nervous system (CNS) plays a central role in the control of sensory and motor functions, and the disruption of its barriers can result in severe and debilitating neurological disorders. Neurotrophins are promising therapeutic agents for neural regeneration in the damaged CNS. However, their penetration across the blood-brain barrier remains a formidable challenge, representing a bottleneck for brain and spinal cord therapy. Herein, a nanocapsule-based delivery system is reported th...

Abstract We have previously reported that chondroitin sulfate extracted from Sturgeon bone (CSSB) can alleviate the pain caused by osteoarthritis (OA) by reducing the expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and inflammatory factors (IL-1, TNF-α and PGE2). However, the mechanism of CSSB for treating OA remains unclear. As is generally accepted, these proteins and factors are regulated by chondrocyte apoptosis in OA. Thus, it is reasonable to hypothesize whether CSSB can inhibit cartilage d...

Abstract Chitosan, a natural biopolymer with osteoconductive properties is widely investigated to generate scaffolds for bone tissue engineering applications. However, chitosan based scaffolds lacks in mechanical strength and structural stability in hydrated condition and thereby limits its application for bone tissue regeneration. Thus in the present study, to overcome the limitations associated with chitosan based scaffolds, we fabricated polyelectrolyte complexation mediated composite scaffol...

Abstract A membrane used for guided bone regeneration (GBR) serves as a bioactive compartment rather than a physical barrier. However, the pure membrane may not provide an optimal microenvironment for bone formation and remodeling. Here, a novel strontium chondroitin sulfate/silk fibroin (SrCS/SF) blend membrane containing microporous structure was fabricated. By increasing incorporation content of SrCS, SrCS/SF membranes exhibit better mechanical properties and higher water retention capacity. ...

Abstract Surface functionalization is generally accepted as one of the most useful methods for endowing better biocompatibility of the cardiovascular implants. Chondroitin sulfate (CS) is a commercial drug applied for preventing cardiovascular diseases in clinics, suggesting a potential application for functionalized coatings. Our previous work demonstrated that the CS conjugated onto the poly-dopamine (PDA)/hexanediamine (HD) co-deposited 316L stainless steel (316L SS) could endow the surface s...

Abstract null null The non-sulfated chondroitin backbone (CH) is the synthetic precursor of chondroitin sulfate, a linear polysaccharide with dramatic biological functions. Owing to the intrinsic characteristics of the polysaccharide biosynthetic pathway, it is still a challenge to obtain structural-defined glycans via microbial fermentation or enzymatic synthesis, which hindering the illustration of CH polysaccharide functions. Herein, we report a robust one-pot multi-enzyme polysaccharide remo...

Abstract null null We report herein the fabrication of a pectin-based scaffold (6 wt% pectin, 3 wt% alginate) with high resolution (small-diameter rods), small pores, and interconnected porosity using a low temperature 3D printing process known as freeze-printing. The ability to successfully print natural polymers has been a long-standing challenge in the field of additive manufacturing of polymeric tissue scaffolds. This is due to the slow evaporation rate of the aqueous solvent, which leads to...

Abstract null null Sturgeon cartilage, which is rich in chondroitin sulfate (CS), is usually discarded during sturgeon utilization. In this paper, CS was isolated from large hybrid sturgeon skull and backbone and named SCS and BCS, respectively. Their structures were investigated via Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The average molecular weights of SCS and BCS were ~ 30–44 kDa. Disacc...
Chondroitin sulfate (CS) is a naturally derived bioactive macromolecule and has been used to improve the performance of silk fibroin (SF) biomaterials for soft tissue regeneration. However, it is still a challenge to use a chemical-free method to prepare water-insoluble SF/CS scaffolds. Here, a novel all-aqueous process was developed to prepare SF/CS scaffolds with controlled properties. Freezing-annealing treatment was used to induce silk I crystallization of SF to entrap CS macromolecules. It ...

Abstract Important researches aim for the development of efficient and cheaper biomedical devices based on natural polysaccharides. In this facet, polyelectrolytes complexes (PECs) are interesting materials for biomedical purposes because they can be prepared without using conventional and volatile organic solvents and toxic crosslinkers, commonly used in the synthesis of chemical hydrogels. For the first time, we used ionic liquids (1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ionic liquids, [...
