Abstract Herein, we demonstrate a novel UV-induced decomposable nanocapsule of natural polysaccharide (HA-azo/PDADMAC). The nanocapsules are fabricated based on layer-by-layer co-assembly of anionic azobenzene functionalized hyaluronic acid (HA-azo) and cationic poly diallyl dimethylammonium chloride (PDADMAC). When the nanocapsules are exposed to 365 nm light, ultraviolet photons can trigger the photo-isomerization of azobenzene groups in the framework. The nanocapsules could decompose from lar...

Abstract In this study, a new scaffold fabrication method based on the combination of a series of stabilization processes was set up to obtain chitosan scaffolds with improved mechanical properties for regeneration of load-bearing tissues. Specifically, thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) of chitosan solutions was used to obtain an open structure which was then stabilized by freeze-gelation and photo cross-linking. Freeze-gelation combined with freeze-drying permitted to obtain a porous st...

Abstract A series of halloysite nanotube (HNT)-doped chitosan (CS)/oxidized dextran (ODEX) adhesive hydrogels were developed through a Schiff base reaction. The resultant CS/ODEX/HNT hydrogels could not only form in situ on wounds within only 1 s when injected, but could also adapt to wounds of different shapes and depths after injection. We established four rat and rabbit hemorrhage models and demonstrated that the hydrogels are better than the clinically used gelatin sponge for reducing hemost...

Abstract The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of cross-linkers on quercetin (QUE) absorption characteristics of QUE-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (CS-NPs). CS-NPs (461.2–482.7 nm) were prepared by ionic gelation at pH 3.5 using tripolyphosphate (367.9 Da), dextran sulfate (>15 kDa), arabic gum (AG, >250 kDa), or hyaluronic acid (HA, >1000 kDa). Mucoadhesion and cell permeation of QUE were significantly increased by positive charged CS-NPs due to interactions with negatively charge...

Abstract Biological materials have excellent mechanical properties due to their organized structures from nano- to macro-scale. Artificial manufacture of materials with anisotropic microstructures still remains challenging. We described a stress-induced method to fabricate anisotropic alginate fibers. Organic-inorganic composite fibers were obtained by incorporating aligned hydroxyapatite (HAP) nanowires into the alginate fiber. Detailed structural characterization revealed the bone-like structu...

Abstract An efficient and low-cost approach to preparing CNFs with succinic acid hydrolysis and NaClO2 oxidation is explored. High-temperature-short-time hydrolysis can depolymerize the cellulose, whereas the dispersibility of the CNFs is hugely enhanced by NaClO2 oxidation under alkaline condition. The degradation of cellulose in succinic acid hydrolysis follows first-order reaction kinetics and is severely influenced by the hydrolysis temperature, moreover, the molecular chains of the cellulos...

Abstract Chitooligosaccharides (COS) are the degraded products of chitin or chitosan. COS is water-soluble, non-cytotoxic to organisms, readily absorbed through the intestine, and eliminated primarily through the kidneys. COS possess a wide range of biological activities, including immunomodulation, cholesterol-lowering, and antitumor activity. Although work on COS goes back at least forty years, several aspects remain unclear. This review narrates the recent developments in COS antitumor activi...

Abstract Hydrogels based on biopolymers like Gum Arabic (GA) usually show low applicability due to weak mechanical properties. To overcome this issue, (nano)fillers are utilized as reinforcing agents. Here, GA hydrogels were reinforced by chitin nanowhiskers (CtNWs, aspect ratio of 14) isolated from the biopolymer chitin through acid hydrolysis. Firstly, GA was chemically modified with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), which allowed its crosslinking by free radical reactions. Next, hydrogel samples c...

Abstract Targeting cell surface receptors for specific drug delivery in cancer has garnered lot of attention. Urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR), a surface biomarker, is overexpressed on many tumours including breast, colorectal, prostate, and ovarian cancers. Binding of growth factor domain (GFD) of urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA) with uPAR lead to its close conformation, and allow somatomedin B domain (SMB) of vitronectin binding by allosteric modulation. In-silico docking o...

Abstract Synthesis and characterization of nanoparticles with different morphologies coupled to minimal chemical interventions for sustainable applications is one of the contemporary topics in the field of nanotechnology. In the current study, heparinized silver nanoparticles were synthesized using a chemical reduction method. Different concentrations of heparin were used to investigate its role in the stability and morphological properties of silver nanoparticles. Interestingly, it has been obs...
