Abstract In our study, the ameliorative effect of salidroside (SAL) from Rhodiola Rosea L. on the intestinal microflora subject to furan-induced liver injury in a mouse model was investigated by 16 S rDNA, oxidative indexes, LPS and cytokine levels. The results demonstrated that SAL alleviated hepatic oxidative injury by inhibiting the activities of AST, ALT and the content of MDA, and promoting the activities of SOD, GSH and GST, compared to the furan-treated group. SAL significantly modified the intestinal microbial diversity and downregulated the circulating levels of serum LPS, IL-6, and TNF-α, as well as enhanced the content of IL-10. Importantly, SAL dramatically increased LPS-suppressing bacteria genera Akkermansia, and decreased LPS-producing bacteria phyla Proteobacteria. Our results indicate that SAL supplement restrains intestinal microbial dysbiosis and systemic low-grade inflammation induced by furan. Hopefully, SAL is a potential therapeutical and prophylactic compound in medicament for hepatic diseases.

Abstract As one of low-digestible proteins, tartary buckwheat protein (BWP) revealed a cholesterol-lowering activity. The relationship between the prevention of BWP on dyslipidemia and changes in the numbers of gut microbiota was investigated. The male C57BL/6 mice were separately fed on normal diet, high-fat diet (HFD) with casein, and HFD with BWP extract for 6 weeks. Quantitative PCR assay was applied to quantify the microbiota composition in feces. The levels of plasma total cholesterol (TC)...

Abstract A Headspace-Solid Phase Microextraction–Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (HS-SPME–GC–MS) method was developed and validated for the simultaneous determination of furan, 2-methylfuran, 2-ethylfuran, 2-butylfuran, 2-pentylfuran, 2-acetylfuran, furfural and furfuryl alcohol in jarred baby food. The method was specific for the analytes. Good precision was obtained both in terms of intra-day repeatability (RSD ≤ 5.02) and inter-day precision (RSD ≤ 5.55%). The recovery values were betwee...

Abstract Microcystins (MCs) are common cyanotoxins produced by harmful cyanobacterial blooms (HCBs) and severely threaten human and ecosystems health. Biodegradation is an efficient and sustainable biological strategy for MCs removal. Many novel findings in fundamental knowledge and application potential of MC-biodegradation have been documented. Little effort has devoted to summarize and comment recent research progress on MC-biodegradation, and discuss the research problems and gaps. This revi...

Abstract Maintaining the balance of the gut microbiota and its metabolic functions is vital for human health, however, this balance can be disrupted by various external factors including food additives. A range of food and beverages are sweetened by saccharin, which is generally considered to be safe despite controversial debates. However, recent studies indicated that saccharin perturbed the gut microbiota. Inflammation is frequently associated with disruptions of the gut microbiota. The aim of...

Capsaicin reduces body weight mainly through activation of transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) cation channel. However, recent evidence indicates that the gut microbiota influences many physiological processes in host and might provoke obesity. This study determined whether the anti-obesity effect of capsaicin is related to the changes in gut microbiota. C57BL/6 mice were fed either with high-fat diet (HFD) or HFD with capsaicin (HFD-CAP) for nine weeks. We observed a significantly ...

Background Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is characterized by fat accumulation in the hepatocyte, inflammation, liver cell injury, and varying degrees of fibrosis, and can lead to oxidative stress in liver. Here, we investigated whether Salidroside, a natural phenolic antioxidant product, can protect rat from liver injury during NASH.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with obesity and type 2 diabetes differ from lean and healthy individuals in their abundance of certain gut microbial species and microbial gene richness. Abundance of Akkermansia muciniphila, a mucin-degrading bacterium, has been inversely associated with body fat mass and glucose intolerance in mice, but more evidence is needed in humans. The impact of diet and weight loss on this bacterial species is unknown. Our objective was to evaluate the association between faecal ...

Designing primers for PCR-based taxonomic surveys that amplify a broad range of phylotypes in varied community samples is a difficult challenge, and the comparability of data sets amplified with varied primers requires attention. Here, we examined the performance of modified 16S rRNA gene and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) primers for archaea/bacteria and fungi, respectively, with nonaquatic samples. We moved primer bar codes to the 5′ end, allowing for a range of different 3′ primer pairings...

Abstract null null Furan is a genotoxic and carcinogenic toxicant formed during the food thermal processing. Our previous studies confirmed that salidroside (SAL) displayed excellent protective effects against furan-induced hepatotoxicity and inflammation, whereas the underlying mechanism was still unclear. In the current study, Balb/c mice were divided to the control group (CON), the furan model group (FUR8, 8 mg/kg BW furan for 30 days) and SAL intervention groups (SAL10/20/40, 8 mg/kg BW fura...

Salidroside (SAL) is the main active ingredient of the plateau plant Rhodiola. So far, many animal experiments proved that SAL has good biological activity against some metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. However, most of these reports are scattered. This review systematically summarizes the pharmacological progress of SAL in the treatment of several metabolic (e.g., diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) and cardiovascular (e.g., atherosclerosis) diseases in a timely manner to promo...

Porphyran and its derivatives possess a variety of biological activities, such as ameliorations of oxidative stress, inflammation, hyperlipemia, and immune deficiencies. In this study, we evaluated the potential efficacy of porphyran-derived oligosaccharides from Porphyra yezoensis (PYOs) in alleviating nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and preliminarily clarified the underlying mechanism. NAFLD was induced by a high-fat diet for six months in C57BL/6J mice, followed by treatment with PYO...

Sphingosine kinase 1 (SphK1) / Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P)/S1PRs signaling pathway is known to involve the advancement of liver fibrosis. Exosomal SphK1 promotes hepatic stellate cells (HSC) migration. Salidroside (Sal) inhibits liver fibrosis, but its mechanism is yet to be elucidated. This study was to explore the influences of Sal on the SphK/S1P/S1PRs signaling pathway in liver fibrosis induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) in vivo, and investigated the mechanism of Sal affecting the migr...

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive cognitive decline and memory loss. However, several therapeutic approaches have shown unsatisfactory outcomes in the clinical setting. Thus, developing alternative therapies for the prevention and treatment of AD is critical. Salidroside (SAL) is critical, an herb-derived phenylpropanoid glycoside compound, has been shown to attenuate lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced cognitive impairment. Howev...
