Abstract For the first time, it was shown the cationic miniemulsion polymerization of styrene using an ionic liquid as catalyst. The ionic liquid (BMI·Fe 2 Cl 7 ) was tolerant to the presence of high amount of water, being effective for polymerization of styrene in the evaluated temperatures range from 70 to 90 °C. Abstract A number of imidazole-based acidic (χ(LA)≥0.6) ionic liquids (RmimCl-LA, where R = Et or Bu, LA = AlCl3, AlBr3, iBuAlCl2, FeCl3, GaCl3, and BBr3) has been synthesized and their activity in cationic polymerization of isobutylene has been assessed.
