Abstract Dust pollution is an important factor restricting social development and affecting human health, especially in some developing countries. Herein, mechanical activation-assisted solid phase reaction (MASPR) and conventional liquid phase (LP) method were employed to synthesize different superabsorbent polymers (SAPs), defined as SAP-MA and SAP-LP, respectively. The rheological properties, crystal structure, changes of functional groups, and dust suppression performance of the SAPs prepared by these two methods were compared, and the dust suppression mechanism of SAPs was discussed via the adsorption experiment between dust suppressant and dust particles. The results showed that SAPs were successfully prepared by the two methods. Compared with SAP-LP, SAP-MA with lower molecular weight, higher grafting rate, and better fluidity and water absorption showed excellent suppression performance. This enhancement could be attributed to that the SAP-MA exhibited lower crystallinity and better film-forming ability, anti-evaporation, anti-consolidation, and permeability induced by MA. Furthermore, the effective chemical adsorption between SAPs and dust particles had a stable consolidation effect. This environmentally-friendly method for the preparation of starch-based super absorbent polymer for road dust suppressant may provide new insights for the valorization of cassava starch and large-scale production of dust suppressant.

Abstract Herein, NaOH solution of a finite concentration was used to pretreat starch, which serves a novel effective pretreatment. A starch-based high-performance adsorptive hydrogel (STAH) was successfully prepared by grafting polyacrylic acid (PAA) onto starch and then crosslinking with N,N'-methylene-bisacrylamide (MBA). This adsorbent was employed to adsorb typical organic cationic dye contaminants (methylene blue (MB)) from high concentration effluents. The effect of the pretreatment time o...

Abstract Although research on phytochemicals has been a hot topic due to positive effects on human health, modification of starch with phytochemicals has been limited. In the present work, cassava starch–ferulic acid (CS-FA) complexes were acquired using different times of mechanical activation via stirring ball milling, and their characterization and physicochemical properties were investigated. Scanning electron microscopy showed the broken structure of native cassava starch, but the smooth st...

Abstract In order to solve the coal dust pollution generated by open-pit mines, a novel environmentally-friendly poly(vinyl alcohol)/sodium alginate (SA)/glycerol (PVA/SA/GLY) composite dust suppressant was obtained by a simple method in this paper. The formulation of dust suppressant was determined through the orthogonal and single-factor tests. Its properties (viscosity, compressive strength, wetting property, resistance to evaporation and biodegradability) were investigated. The test results ...

Abstract Due to production technologies such as blasting, transportation, and loading, large quantities of dust are produced in surface mines. This dust not only pollutes the environment but also restricts the development of coal mining enterprises. This work aims to use waste paper as raw material for the efficient extraction of cellulose, in which waste materials can be converted to usable materials. This work can broaden the sources of raw materials and provide new methods for the efficient p...

Abstract Ground Tire Rubber (GTR) is one of the asphalt modifiers that enhances the performance properties of asphalt mixtures and helping to reduce environment pollutions. Improvement in the mechanical behavior of rubberized binders depends on the mechanism of interactions between GTR and base binder. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of GTR dissolution on rheological properties and performance properties of the asphalt binder. The effect of interaction between blend...

Abstract The purpose of this study is to prepare an environmentally friendly composite dust suppressant that can be used to wet the dust deposited in underground mine roadways, where it can effectively prevent the occurrence of dust. The dust suppressant is prepared by using starch as the raw material and methyl methacrylateand and acrylamide as monomers, followed by mixing with a surfactant. FTIR, XRD and SEM are employed to compare the changes in the functional groups, crystal structure and mi...

Abstract The ventilations of pressure cylinders is a widely used practice in coal mine roadways in China. It has been determined that the velocities of the ventilations will directly affect the diffusion of the dust particles which reduce the visibility of road-header drivers, and also tend to slowdown operating efficiency. In this study, a CFD-DPM method was adopted in order to examine the airflow flow and dust pollution behaviors in coal mine roadways under various ventilation velocities. The ...

Abstract The conveyor transport inevitably generates a large amount of dust during the coal mining process, which severely threatens the heath of miners and causes waste of resources. Therefore, a central topic of the coal mine occupational safety research concerns the control of dust associated with conveyor transport. This process prepares an environmentally-friendly wetting cementing agent suitable for controlling dust generated by conveyor transport. Subsequently, infrared spectroscopy, ther...

Abstract To promote the large-scale production of starch-based biomaterials, we developed a method of synthesis based on reactive extrusion that combines the benefits of continuous manufacturing with the use of green chemistry principles. This paper describes the grafting of four different types of starches with acrylamide monomers via free radical copolymerization using twin-screw extrusion technology. The elemental analysis confirmed the success of this method, with an average monomer conversi...

Airborne dust is a byproduct of natural and artificial occurrences, including high winds in arid regions and human activities, and it affects most of the world's population. Watering is the most general practice for reducing airborne dust by wetting the surface of the dust source to agglomerate dust particles via the capillary effect, increasing the aerodynamic diameter of (ultra)fine particles and reducing dust emission. However, the short-term effectiveness due to fast water evaporation, requi...
