Abstract null null This study was aimed to determine the efficacy of combination of fucoidan from the brown algae Fucus evanescens (FeF) or its derivatives with thornasteroside A (ThA) or asteropsiside A (AsA) from the starfish Asteropsis carinifera in combating human melanoma cells. null In vitro MTS and soft agar methods were performed to determine effect of FeF, its derivatives, ThA, AsA or their combination on proliferation and colony formation of SK-MEL-28 cells in 2D and 3D culture. Desulf...

The effects of a novel Flammulina velutipes polysaccharide (FVP) on intestinal microbiota, immune repertoire and heart transcriptome were investigated in this study. The results showed that FVP treatment could effectively regulate the abundance of colonic microbiota. And FVP exhibited obvious immunoregulatory effect by influencing V gene and J gene fragments usage on TCRα chain. The usage frequency of TRBV1, TRBJ1-6 and TRBJ1-5 were significantly altered, and 41 V-J pairs were identified with ob...

Abstract null null Members of group Bacillus are most widely occurring microbes in agricultural soil and they affect crop health in various ways. They directly stimulate plant growth either by augmenting nutrients availability, invigorating plants' defence mechanisms; repressing soil-borne phytopathogens or by producing growth-regulating hormones like auxins and cytokinins. It is a well known fact that indole-3- acetic acid (a type of auxin) is a vital biologically active phytohormone excreted b...

Abstract null null Ultrasound was widely used in starch modification, whereas there was no review focusing on the effects of different ultrasonic treatments on A-, B- and C-type starches. In this study, the effects of ultrasonic power (UP, 100–600 W) and ultrasonic time (UT, 5–35 min) on structural, digestibility and rheology of corn starch (CS), potato starch (PtS), and pea starch (PS) were investigated. As a result, UP and UT decreased the apparent amylose content of CS and PS, while increased...

Abstract null null Steam explosion (SE) was a friendly environmentally pretreatment method. In this study, the effect of steam explosion (SE) pretreatment on structure and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of Ampelopsis grossedentata polysaccharides was evaluated. Two novel polysaccharides (AGP and AGP-SE) were extracted, isolated, purified and analyzed by NMR, FT-IR and methylation. The results indicated that AGP mainly consisted of Rha, Xyl, Glc, and Ara with a molecular weight of 2.74 × 103 k...

Abstract null null Aquaporin (AQP) transport solutes across cell membranes in both unicellular and multicellular organisms. In this study, the aquaporin CsPrip was identified in Chilo suppressalis, an important pest of rice. CsPrip was comprised of two variants, CsPrip_v1 and CsPrip_v2; the former variant was

Abstract null null Lignin is recommended to a tempting alternative precursor of petroleum for fabricating carbon nanofibers (CNFs) due to its high carbon content, low-cost and renewable resources. However, the property of lignin-based carbon nanofibers (LCNFs) is inferior owing to the heterogeneity and 3D-network structure of lignin, which hinders its application in supercapacitors. The latest developments in fractionation technology have shown great potential for overcoming the aforementioned s...

Abstract null null Bovine pericardium(BP)is one of the biological membranes with extensive application in tissue engineering. To fully investigate the potential clinical applications of this natural biological material, a suitable cross-linking reagent is hopefully adopted for modification. Glutaraldehyde (GA) is a clinically most common synthetic cross-linking reagent. In the study, oxidized hyaluronic acid (AHA) was developed to substitute GA to fix acellular bovine pericardium (ABP) for lower...
A self-strengthening coating with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) doped chitosan (CHI) and sodium alginate (SA) polyelectrolytes was constructed on the surface of polydopamine (PDA) coated Ti substrate by a layer-by-layer assembly method. The PDA coating exhibited an excellent bond with Ti substrate, and also can uniformly deposit Ag NPs via a mild method without introducing any exogenous reductant. The CHI coating was assembled through a spin-coating method for controlling Ag+ release. The SA was...

Abstract null null Native starches are not suitable for industrial use and must be modified for improved functionality. In this study, the effect of moisture preconditioning and infrared heating time on physicochemical properties of cowpea starch was investigated using a two-factor central composite rotatable design. Factors (moisture levels:10–40 g/100 g starch and infrared heating time:10–60 min) with their corresponding α mid-point values resulted in 13 experimental runs. Selected functional ...
