Purpose Enterococcus faecalis causes severe acute endophthalmitis and often leads to poor visual outcomes. Conjunctival bacterial cultures occasionally grow atypical bacteria including E. faecalis, which can potentially contribute to the development of postoperative endophthalmitis. However, the characteristics of these ocular E. faecalis strains are unknown. This study is the first attempt to determine the population characteristics of E. faecalis clinical isolates from eye infections and ocula...

Abstract The current worldwide emergence of resistance to antibiotics in bacteria constitutes an important growing public health threat. The mechanisms of the emergence and dissemination of resistance remain to be elucidated. Adaptation laboratory evolution provide an approach to investigate the acquisition of de novo mutations that confers drug resistance. In our study, 3 Enterococcus faecalis clinical isolates and E. faecalis ATCC29212 were evolved resistant to 8 kinds of antimicrobials spanni...

Enterococcus spp. is the common of intestinal micro flora in humans but nowadays this gram-positive bacterium causes the variety of nosocomial infections. Resistance to antibiotic and also, presence of different virulence genes in the enterococcus spp. can change it to problematic microorganisms in the health care centers. The aim of this study was determined the genotyping, antimicrobial resistance and virulence factor gene profiles of vancomycin resistance Enterococcus faecalis isolated from b...

Purpose Postoperative endophthalmitis caused by Enterococcus faecalis often results in poor visual outcome due to retinal destruction. We evaluated the virulence factors of Enterococcus faecalis clinical isolates and analyzed their relationship with retinal destruction and poor visual outcomes in postoperative bacterial endophthalmitis (PBE) following cataract surgery. Retrospective. E. faecalis isolates from nine acute-onset PBE cases were examined using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis of geno...

To compare the related factors or manifestations of the two most common isolates of post-operative endophthalmitis, which were Enterococcus spp. and coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) in South Korea. Medical records were reviewed for cases of post-operative endophthalmitis caused by Enterococcus spp. and CNS at eight institutions between January 2004 and July 2010. Various factors including age, sex, residence, systemic diseases, smoking and drinking history, and best corrected visual acuity...

Abstract Introduction The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of virulence factors and the antimicrobial resistance of Enterococcus faecalis isolates of teeth with failure of the endodontic treatment. Methods Twenty root canal samples were collected from teeth with apical periodontitis. E. faecalis was firstly identified based on phenotypic features and then by 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing. The antimicrobial susceptibility was determined by the minimum inhibitory concentrati...

In this study, 72 Enterococcus faecalis isolates originating from humans (n=39), dogs (n=26) and cats (n=7) were investigated for some virulence factors, some virulence genes, antibiotic resistance phenotypes, randomly amplified polymorphic DNA-polymerase chain reaction (RAPD-PCR) patterns and biofilm production. Of the isolates, 31 (43.1%) were positive for gelatinase, 11 (15.3%) for aggregation substance and cytolysine, 38 (52.8%) for gelE and 34 (47.2%) for asa1 genes. All isolates were found...

Abstract To investigate antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of various bacterial pathogens isolated from complicated urinary tract infection (UTI) cases, the Japanese Society of Chemotherapy, the Japanese Association of Infectious Disease, and the Japanese Society of Clinical Microbiology conducted the second nationwide surveillance from January to September 2011. With the cooperation of 42 medical institutions throughout Japan, 1036 strains belonging to 8 clinically relevant bacterial species...

Background Enterococci have emerged as an important opportunistic pathogen causing life-threatening infections in hospitals. The emergence of this pathogen is associated with a remarkable capacity to accumulate resistance to antimicrobials and multidrug-resistance particularly to vancomycin, erythromycin and streptomycin have become a major cause of concern for the infectious diseases community. In this paper, we report the prevalence of Enterococcus in respect to species distribution, their vir...
