Abstract Improving the fracture and post-cracking toughness of carbon fiber-reinforced composites based on thermosetting epoxy matrices are of significant interest in a wide range of applications. Herein, we report the synergistic integration of multi-scale composites by combining nano-scale filler and macro-scale fiber reinforcement inspired by the hierarchy approach. For the nano-scale filler, the carbon black (CB) surface was successfully modified using ozone treatment and thereby achieved hi...

In this work, the relations between fracture surface roughness in mode I and the content of different carbon nanoparticles, graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) and carbon nanotubes (CNT) were systematically investigated. A block copolymer (BC) was also used to aid the dispersion process considering its role on fracture toughness. Both KIc and GIc were found to increase significantly with the addition of a BC along with carbon nanoparticles. Roughness measurements showed that the value of surface roughn...

Abstract Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are considered as high potential filler material to improve the mechanical properties of epoxy nanocomposites. The CNTs are functionalized by attaching melamine to improve the dispersibility in epoxy matrix and to enhance the interfacial bonding between CNTs and matrix. The tensile tests and single edge notch bending (SENB) tests were performed for CNT/Epoxy and M-CNT/Epoxy nanocomposites at various weight fraction of functionalized CNTs. The M-CNT/Epoxy nanocomp...

In this work, hydroxyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (H-t-PDMS) nanocomposites reinforced by different contents of graphene oxide nanoribbons (GONRs) were prepared via a facile solvent-free process, and the mechanical properties of the H-t-PDMS/GONR nanocomposites were investigated and compared with the corresponding nanocomposites containing pristine carbon nanotubes (CNTs) or functionalized CNTs (f-CNTs). It was found that the GONRs with abundant functional groups showed good compatibility w...

Abstract Although the effects of the incorporation of nanoparticles in polymer matrices are deeply studied in the literature, the mechanisms that promote higher properties are not well reported. In this paper, the reinforcement and toughening mechanisms that act on nanoclay/epoxy nanocomposites were studied. For this purpose, two types of nanoclays were used (sodium nanoclay and organophilic nanoclay) in three different concentrations. We propose the reinforcement effectiveness concept, which pr...

Abstract The addition of nanoparticles has been reported as an option to increase the fracture toughness of thermosetting polymers without compromising the stiffness. In this paper, alumina or carbon nanotubes (CNTs), in three different concentrations, were dispersed in an epoxy resin. Mechanical properties were measured through tensile test and the results indicate increases for all nanocomposites, with a maximum for the addition of 0.5% of CNTs (17% in elastic modulus and 22% in ultimate stres...

Abstract Here we report the effect of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and thermally reduced graphene (TRG) on the miscibility, morphology and final properties of nanostructured epoxy resin with an amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) triblock copolymer. The addition of nanoparticles did not have any influence on the miscibility of PEO-PPO-PEO copolymer in the resin. However, MWCNTs and TRG reduced the degree of crystallinity of the PEO-...
