Abstract
Abstract The impact of secondary metabolites on fruit quality, plant growth and human health has led to an increased demand for analytical methods to characterize and quantify these metabolites in recent years. A versatile, sensitive and rapid method based on UHPLC-QqQ-MS/MS was developed for simultaneous qualitation and quantitation of coumarins, furocoumarins, flavonoids and phenolic acids. The chromatographic elution and multiple reaction monitoring mode transitions were optimized to achieve good separation and accurate quantitation of 47 analytes, including 13 groups of isomers, during a single 13 min chromatographic run. This method was validated with good precision and recoveries, wide linear ranges and low limits of detection and quantitation (0.014–1.50 μg L−1). The validated method was further applied to quantify the analytes in flavedo, albedo and pulp from two pummelo varieties, C. grandis ‘Shatianyu’ and C. grandis ‘Guanximiyu’. This method combines high sensitivity, good selectivity, and short chromatographic run time.

Abstract Furanocoumarins are a class of naturally occurring phototoxic substances widely spread throughout the Umbelliferae and Rutacea families of plants. Plant extract of these families (e.g. citrus extracts) are commonly used as ingredients in fragrances and cosmetic products. Due to their phototoxicity these substances are regulated within the European Union according to the European Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009 on cosmetic products. The proposed analytical workflow aims to swiftly screen o...

Abstract Ten sesame genotypes planted under two irrigation regimes of 60% and 90%, as the maximum allowable depletion (MAD), were used to investigate the effects of drought stress on certain quantitative and qualitative characters of sesame seeds with four contrasting coat colors. The polyphenolic components, sesamin, sesamolin, total flavonoid content (TFC), total phenolic content (TPC), radical scavenging activity (RSA), seed yield, and oil content of the seeds were also examined. Results reve...

Abstract India is an important diversity center for different types of citrus species including pummelo (Citrus grandis L. Osbeck). The major objective of the present study was to determine variation in polyphenolic compounds, antioxidant activity, sugars and organic acid in 16 pummelo (red, pink and white flesh) genotypes. Significant differences (p

Abstract China is one of the main production areas of pummelo [Citrus grandis (L.) Osbeck.] in the world and has lots of distinctive local cultivars. Systematic research on the detection of phenolics and antioxidant capacity of peels of mature local cultivars pummelo fruits is rare. In the current study, phenolic composition and content in peels (flavedo and albedo) of ten Chinese local pummelo cultivars were determined using Ultraviolet Spectrophotometer and High Performance Liquid Chromatograp...

Flavonoids are widely known for the colors they confer to plant tissues, their contribution to plant fitness and health benefits, and impact on food quality. As convenient biological markers, flavonoids have been instrumental in major genetic and epigenetic discoveries. We review recent advances in the characterization of the underlying regulatory mechanisms of flavonoid biosynthesis, with a special focus on the MBW (MYB–bHLH–WDR) protein complexes. These proteins are well conserved in higher pl...

China is one of the most important diversity centres of the genus Citrus L. and is particularly rich in pummelo germplasm. In this study, the flavonoids in the peels and pulps of 28 Chinese local pummelos and four grapefruits were determined by optimised Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC), and their antioxidant capacities were evaluated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radicals (DPPH), ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) and superoxide anion methods. We found that naringin wa...

As one of the most important centres of origin for the genus Citrus L., China is rich in wild mandarin germplasm. In this study, phenolic compounds in the peels of 14 wild mandarin genotypes native to China were determined and their antioxidant capacities were evaluated using DPPH, FRAP, ABTS and ORAC methods. We found that Nieduyeju had the highest total phenol content (51.14 mg/g DW), and Wulongsuanju had the highest total flavonoid content (20.66 mg/g DW). Hesperidin, the dominant flavonoid, ...

Coumarins and furanocoumarins are secondary metabolites commonly found in citrus plants. These molecules are allelochemical compounds in plants that have controversial effects on humans, such as phototoxicity and the commonly described interactions with drugs, referred to as the “grapefruit juice effect”. Thus, it is important to develop a reliable method to identify and quantitate the coumarins and furanocoumarins in citrus extracts. For this purpose, we herein describe an ultraperformance liqu...

Abstract null null Increasingly attention has been paid to the active substances in grapefruit peel. In this study, insoluble bound phenolic compounds (BP) were released from grapefruit peel insoluble dietary fiber (GP-IDF) by microwave extraction (M-BP), enzymatic hydrolysis (E-BP) and combined microwave and enzymatic treatment (ME-BP). The results showed that the yield of ME-BP was the highest (148.856 ± 0.620 GAE mg/100 g), and conditions of microwave treatment (microwave power, temperature, ...

Coumarin is a natural product with aromatic and fragrant characteristics, widespread in the entire plant kingdom. It is found in different plant sources such as vegetables, spices, fruits, and medicinal plants including all parts of the plants—fruits, roots, stems and leaves. Coumarin is found in high concentrations in certain types of cinnamon, which is one of the most frequent sources for human exposure to this substance. However, human exposure to coumarin has not been strictly determined, si...
