Abstract
Abstract Amongst the natural polymers, chitin is the second most abundant, present mainly in fungi and exoskeleton of crustaceans. It forms a major part of the seafood waste as compiled and presented in this review and is de-acetylated to produce chitosan. Structure and properties of chitosan have been described. Biocompatible and biodegradable characteristics of chitosan have been well studied. In addition to the environmental sustainability associated with its use, the malleability of chitosan, due to its reactive amino and hydroxyl groups, adds to its wide repertoire in usage through various modifications. Recent publications of chitosan and derivatives have been classified into its various applications in food, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical, textile, paper, agriculture and environmental applications. The abundance of chitosan and diversity in modifications can be effectively utilized in various applications leading to environmental friendly solutions as highlighted in this review.

Abstract Chitosan is obtained from chitin, which could be considered to be the most abundant polymer after cellulose. Owing to these properties, chitosan alone or chitosan-based composite film production is attaining huge attention in terms of applications from researchers and industrialists coming from divergent fields. To enhance the biological (mainly antimicrobial and antioxidant) and physiological (mainly mechanical, thermal and barrier) attributes of the chitosan-based films, a vast medley...

Purpose The aim of this article is to present the first life cycle assessment of chitosan production based on data from two real producers located in India and Europe. The goal of the life cycle assessment (LCA) was to understand the main hot spots in the two supply chains, which are substantially different in terms of raw materials and production locations.

Abstract N-selective derivatives of chitosan (CH) namely, N-methyl chitosan (NMC), trimethyl chitosan (TMC), diethyl methyl chitosan (DEMC) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) were synthesized to study the effects of alkylation on antimicrobial property and biocompatibility. The derivatives were characterized by FT-IR confirming O-free alkyl substitution. XRD studies showed reduction in crystallinity and zeta potential measurement proved the increase in positive charges upon alkylation. Antimicrobi...

The accumulation of synthetic plastics, mainly from food packaging, is causing a serious environmental problem. It is driving research efforts to the development of biodegradable films and coatings. The biopolymers used as raw material to prepare biodegradable films should be renewable, abundant and low-cost. In some cases, they can be obtained from wastes. This review summarizes the advances in polysaccharide-based films and coatings for food packaging. Among the materials studied to develop bi...

Dietary fibres have diverse mechanisms in reducing plasma cholesterol, which could be useful for treating high levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). The objective of this review is to determine the state of the evidence for the cholesterol-lowering effects of three selected fibres and their mechanisms, using the most recent animal trials. Therefore, a systematic review was conducted for hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), pectin and chitosan in Pubmed, Embase and the Cochrane ...

Abstract SiOx anodes hold great promise for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to the high capacity and enhanced cycling stability versus silicon. However, its long-term development is hampered by seeking a scalable and effective method to tackle the issues of low conductivity and large volume expansion. Herein, a novel anode material is constructed by wrapping SiOx into PVA derived carbon layer and N-doped carbon (NC) nanosheets derived from exfoliated chitin nanosheets. The chiti...

Abstract The application of environmentally-friendly fungicides, such as elicitors and botanical fungicides, to minimize the risk of exposure to the ecosystem has become a global trend. However, the bioactivity and absorbency of elicitors are critical factors that limit the large-scale field application. With the objective of exploring a sustainable method for controlling plant diseases, a star polymer (SPc) was constructed to deliver plant elicitors/botanical fungicides with a low production co...

Abstract In this study, two bio-based benzoxazines, PH-f and SA-f, were synthesized and used to prepare benzoxazine/chitosan (CS) composites of PH-f/CS and SA-f/CS and their corresponding curing products poly(PH-f)/CS and poly(SA-f)/CS. Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra show that, compared with poly(PH-f)/CS, the formation of imine-linkages (C=N) between SA-f and CS accelerates the benzoxazine ring-opening reaction and lowers the c...

Abstract This review provides an insight about the functional properties of chitosan obtained through Maillard reaction to enhance the shelf life and food quality. Maillard reaction is a promising and safe method to obtain commercial water-soluble chitosan’s through Schiff base linkage and Amadori or Heyns rearrangement. Likewise, chitosan derivatives exert an enhanced antimicrobial, antioxidant, and emulsifying properties due to the development of Maillard reaction products (MRPs) like reducton...

Abstract Food packaging, particularly active packaging, plays an important role in maintaining food quality and safety. Incorporating antimicrobial agents into films usually enhances the antimicrobial activity, but easily provokes a burst release of antimicrobials and degrades film performance. Recent studies found that addition of reinforcement agents effectively improved mechanical strength and barrier properties of packaging films. Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) are natural clays with a unique t...

Abstract Tremendous awareness of determination of chitosan content accurately is increasing, due to it has great significance to the quality control of chitosan. In this article, two kinds of chitosan-Schiff base derivatives (BCSB and PCSB) were synthesized by the different average degrees of deacetylation (DD) of chitosan with benzaldehyde or propanal, respectively. The total mass of Schiff base derivative product was dried and obtained without washing and loss. Then, a certain amount of the pr...
