Abstract
The bacterium Treponema pallidum (TP) causes human syphilis (subsp. pallidum; TPA), bejel (subsp. endemicum; TEN), and yaws (subsp. pertenue; TPE). Although syphilis has reached a worldwide distribution, bejel and yaws have remained endemic diseases.
