Abstract
The micro-groove array structure was processed by high speed precision micro-milling machine on the aluminum alloy surface. The direct relationship that milling parameters influence the surface roughness and surface burr were studied when milling the aluminum alloy surface by using micro-diameter milling cutter with a diameter of 150μm. And then the microstructure which was processed by using optimal parameters and the hydrophobic properties of aluminum alloy surface were observed. The results show that: High speed precision micro-milling machining parameters have a certain effect on surface roughness and surface burrs, and the effects of different milling parameters are different. The micro-groove array structure which was processed on the smooth aluminum alloy surface the intrinsic contact Angle is about 62° can effectively improve material surface hydrophobic properties. The contact angle of micro-groove array is 91° in the parallel direction, and 123° in the vertical direction without the chemical modification, respectively. The microstructure array was constructed on the surface of metal materials based on high speed precision micro-milling technique, and the surface wettability of the material was transformed by hydrophilic to hydrophobic.

For the drag reduction application of hydrophobic material, the drag characteristic of typical surface with different roughness or different hydrophobicity is studied by a new annulus experiment. The corresponding torque characteristic and drag reduction rate curve are acquired. The experiment indirectly calculate the surface friction of the annulus by measuring the torque of disk driving annulus and breaks through the limitation of scale in traditional microchannel experiment, avoids the drawba...

The market for freeform and high quality microdies and moulds made of steel is predicted to experience a phenomenal growth in line with the demand for microsystems. However, micromachining of hardened steel is a challenge due to unpredictable tool life and likely differences in process mechanism compared to macro-scale machining. This paper presents an investigation of the size effect in micromilling of H13 hardened tool steel. In this case, the size effect in micromilling hardened tool steel wa...

Abstract This paper reports the results of experiments to investigate burr formation and tool chipping during the face milling of stainless steel, using a fly milling cutter to carry out single-tooth face milling tests. It is found that the burr height is strongly dependent upon the milling process . The results show that five different types of burr can be produced on the exit edge, e.g. knife-type, saw-type, burr breakage curl-type and wave-type. A large depth of cut contributes to the formati...

Abstract Previous research on burr formation in face milling operations has usually been limited to the study of the rollover burr in the cutting direction and/or to a few machining parameters. This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the influence of the main cutting parameters on the formation of the more important burrs produced in face milling operations, namely exit burr in the cutting direction, exit burr in the feed direction and the burr formed at the top edge in a squ...

Abstract Micrometer sized FeAl particles were added on 304 stainless steel surfaces to prepare rough surfaces with irregular patterns to make the surface super hydrophilic in order to effectively coat catalyst carrier alumina slurry on them. This method was compared with other conventional methods as follows. Micromachining and acid etching were firstly tried to prepare regular patterned surfaces with square micropillar arrays. Sand blasting was then tried to create micro roughness of the surfac...
