Copper-Catalyzed Aerobic Oxidation and Oxygenation of Anilines and Acetaldehydes with Dioxygen for the Concise Synthesis of 2-Aroylquinolines

A concise and efficient aerobic oxidation and oxygenation approach for the construction of 2-aroylquinolines has been developed through copper-catalyzed annulation of anilines, acetaldehydes, and dioxygen. 2,2,6,6-Tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl was employed to direct the selectivity toward the desired 2-aroyl products. Molecular oxygen was used in this transformation as an environmentally benign source of oxygen.

A highly selective copper-catalyzed concise synthesis of 3,5-diarylpyridine and 2-(1H)-pyridone has been achieved through cascade Chichibabin-type cyclization, C(sp3)–C(sp3) cleavage, and aerobic oxidation. Azide, ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN), and 2-aminopyridine are disclosed as efficient nitrogen donors in this Cu-catalysis using O2 as the oxidant. Water and molecular oxygen were employed as the oxygen source in the case of oxygenation.

An efficient method for the direct synthesis of substituted quinolines from anilines and aldehydes through C–H functionalization, C–C/C–N bond formation, and C–C bond cleavage has been developed. The method is simple and practical and employs air as an oxidant.

An organocatalytic aldehyde C–H bond arylation process for the synthesis of complex heteroaryl ketones has been developed. Employing sulfonyl azide as a nitrogen donor, a visible-light-enabled aerobic dealkylative imidation of tertiary and secondary amines involving C(sp3)–C(sp3) bond cleavage with moderate to excellent yields at room temperature is described.
