Abstract
This Review describes how different modes of cell death protect against bacterial and viral infections, and the complex signalling crosstalk between the different pathways during an infection. Eukaryotic cells can die from physical trauma, which results in necrosis. Alternatively, they can die through programmed cell death upon the stimulation of specific signalling pathways.
