Abstract
Abstract Crosslinked chitosan was prepared by Schiff base formation between the aldehyde groups of dialdehyde cellulose (DAC) and the amino groups of chitosan and a subsequent reduction. DAC was obtained through periodate oxidation of cellulose and solubilization in hot water at 100 °C for 1 h. Three grades of DAC-crosslinked chitosan were prepared by adding various amounts DAC. The degrees of crosslinking as determined by amino group content were 3.8, 8.3, and 12.1%, respectively. DAC-crosslinked chitosan showed higher stability in the pH 2–9 range and no cytotoxicity was identified over the course of a 21-day long-term stability test. Also, DAC-crosslinked chitosan showed remarkably high bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorption capacity at pH 5.5 as a result of the increased amino group content, due to the reaction between DAC and chitosan molecular chains occurring at multiple points even though DAC-crosslinked chitosan showed a lower degree of crosslinking.

Abstract The research has focused on the modification of the physicochemical properties of silver carp collagen by using 2,3-dialdehyde cellulose (DAC) as a crosslinking agent. DAC was prepared by a regioselective oxidation of cellulose with periodate. The effect of collagen crosslinking on its properties, particularly structural, biological, thermal and mechanical viscoelastic behavior has been investigated. FTIR studies demonstrate that crosslinking is achieved through the reaction of the DAC ...

Abstract Zwitterionic (ZI) membranes are well-known for their high resistance to protein fouling during ultrafiltration (UF). In this work, zwitterionic chitosan (ZICS) was firstly obtained by a Schiff-base formation and a sulfonation reaction. Then a series of zwitterionic organic–inorganic hybrid ultrafiltration membranes were prepared through linking ZICS with poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) using tetraethyl orthosilicate as a bridge, where the density of zwitterionic groups in the membranes was adj...

Chitosan hydrogels were cross-linked with glutaraldehyde and examined for the adsorption of a model protein (bovine serum albumin, BSA) at different pH and cross-linking ratios. It was observed that the cross-linking significantly improved the chemical and structural stability of the hydrogel beads. The adsorption equilibrium was described by the Langmuir isotherm. The optimal adsorption capacity was identified at the cross-linking ratio of 0.2 and a pH of 5.5. The cross-linked chitosan hydrogel...

Abstract In the past few decades, the textile industry has significantly increased investment in research to develop functional fabrics, with a special focus on those aggregating values. Such fabrics can exploit microparticles inferior to 100 μm, such as those made by complex coacervation in their creation. The antimicrobial properties of chitosan can be attributed to these microparticles. Developing particles with uniform structure and properties would facilitate the control for the eventual re...

Abstract Chitosan, a natural polysaccharide copolymer of glucosamine and N-acetyl-glucosamine, possesses one free primary amine and two free hydroxyl groups on each glucosamine unit. It has a polycationic nature and an abundance of amine functional groups. The sorption equilibrium and kinetics of arsenate onto chitosan flakes have been studied. The effect of pH on the adsorption capacity and the uptake kinetics is an important parameter to investigate the adsorption mechanism of anionic species ...

The early diagnosis of diseases related to phosphate metabolism is very important for preventing, in most cases, severe kidney failure and cardiovascular events that have an increased risk of death. In this work, we present biofunctionalized quantum dots (b-QDs) prepared with chitosan and its chemically modified derivatives to detect and capture phosphate in water media. Chitosan (CHI), N,N,N-trimethylchitosan (TMC) and carboxymethylchitosan (CMC) were used as ligands for producing colloidal CdS...

In this paper, some key parameters, such as the system pH, the periodate concentration, and the reaction temperature, on the influence of the bagasse fiber degradation were studied based on the oxygenant of periodate. And the feasible reaction mechanism was also discussed through the FTIR characterization for bagasse fiber before and after the oxidizing reaction. As the results shown, the crystallinity of bagasse fiber decreased with the oxidation level increasing. It was interesting that the al...

Abstract Surfaces engineered to identify and enrich glycoproteins are of considerable interest in the diagnostic and detection fields. A boronate affinity (BA) material was proposed as a potential candidate for the isolation of glycoproteins. However, this material has the disadvantages of low efficiency and non-degradability. Herein, a novel dendrimer-amplified BA cellulose foam (PEI-PBA-CF) was fabricated via a mild two-step approach. The as-prepared PEI-PBA-CF exhibited a rapid adsorption equ...

It was a key material for basic needs, especially for the construction of shelters, paper making, which allowed our ancestors to perpetuate the valuable literary, philosophical or artistic works. In modern era, cellulose has acquired new dimensions of knowledge and scientific interest. This increased interest in cellulose is due to the need to exploit the still unknown resources that cellulose provid...

Chitosan (CS) has been widely used to prepare natural hydrogel duo to its characteristics. However, most of the methods of preparing CS-based hydrogel are complicated and not green, which limits its further application. In this work, a green and antibacterial CS-based hydrogel was prepared by simple Schiff base reaction between CS and water-soluble 2,3-dialdehyde cellulose (DAC) obtained by simple heat treatment of DAC of high oxidation degree. The effect of DAC dosage on the properties of hydro...
