Purpose. To determine the differences in risk factors for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in paired twins. Methods. A retrospective medical record review was performed for all paired twins screened for ROP between 2007 and 2012. Screening was offered to very low birth weight (≤1500 grams) and preterm (≤32 weeks) neonates. Twins 1 and 2 were categorized based on the order of delivery. Maternal and neonatal covariates were analyzed using univariate and multivariate regression analyses for both RO...

Objectives To report on retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screening compliance against a national guideline, factors associated with non-compliance and effect on ROP treatment. Design National cohort study using operational NHS data from the National Neonatal Research Database (NNRD) for the period 2009–2011. Setting 161 (94%) neonatal units in England. Population Infants born below 32 weeks’ gestation and/or with a birth weight below 1501 g. Main outcome measures ROP screening status (‘on-time’,...

To study intersibling variability of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in twins and determine its risk factors. A retrospective chart review of twin neonates developing ROP at a tertiary center over a 5 year period (January 2004 to December 2008). Twin pairs with intersibling variability of ROP were retrieved based on one of the following criterion: (1) two-stage difference in ROP between siblings, (2) one sibling with treatable ROP and the other with spontaneously regressed ROP, or (3) one sibli...

AIM As a result of the increase in premature births and the advances in neonatal intensive care, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) remains one of the most important causes of childhood blindness worldwide. The main factors in the development of ROP are gestational age, birth weight and oxygen therapy. ROP continues to gain importance due to the increasing survival rates of more immature babies.

Background: In twin births, both babies have the same gestational age and pre-natal conditions. However, twins may develop a varied retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) course depending on birth weight and other systemic factors. Objective: To study the profile of asymmetric ROP in twins Design: Retrospective study Setting: Tertiary ROP referral eye hospital. Materials and Methods: The profile of 56 pairs of twins with ROP were studied and analyzed for differences in zone or need for treatment, whil...

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to report the possible role of thrombocytopenia in the pathogenesis of aggressive posterior retinopathy of prematurity (APROP). METHODS: The index case described in this study showed spontaneous resolution of APROP with plus disease within 3 days of correcting thrombocytopenia and did not require laser treatment. The retrospective cohort of nine consecutive Asian Indian infants with APROP with similar stage and plus disease as the index case was studied. Th...

Objective: Guidelines on oxygenation policies and on the prevention and treatment of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) were issued by the Chinese Medical Association in 2004. This study was undertaken to determine the incidence of and risk factors for ROP among preterm infants in Beijing, the capital of China, after implementation of the guidelines. Methods: Neonates with birth weights (BW) 20 s, anaemia, hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy and placenta abruption were significantly associated with t...

Summary To investigate the postnatal risk factors of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), we analysed demographic and clinical data abstracted from the medical records of 425 premature babies who were examined for ROP between January 1994 and December 1998 at Asan Medical Centre, Seoul, Korea. ROP developed in 20.7% of the cases studied. A gestational age (GA) of ≤ 28 weeks and birthweight (BW) of ≤ 1000 g were the most significant risk factors. Ventilator care for ≥ 48 h, apnoea, and use of surfac...
