Abstract The effect of sodium caseinate addition on corn starch films was studied in terms of microstructural, mechanical, optical and water and oxygen barrier properties and the changes they underwent during their 5 weeks' storage under controlled conditions. The influence of the polymer mixture on the degree of crystallization of the films was also analysed. The following starch: protein ratios were considered. 100:0, 75:50, 50:50 and 0:100. SEM Microstructure analysis revealed the compatibili...

Abstract Biodegradable films from ahipa, cassava and corn native starches were developed by casting method and their physicochemical, mechanical and barrier properties were analyzed taking into account the different starch botanical sources. Filmogenic suspensions were prepared; their rheological behaviors were studied and all of them exhibited film-forming ability. However, mechanical assays demonstrated that unplasticized films were too rigid, limiting their technological applications. Thus, 1...

Abstract Chitosan–starch blend films (thickness 0.2 mm) of different composition were prepared by casting and their mechanical properties were studied. To improve the properties of chitosan–starch films, glycerol and mustard oil of different composition were used. Chitosan–starch films, incorporated with glycerol and mustard oil, were further modified with monomer 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) using gamma radiation. The modified films showed improvement in both tensile strength and elongati...

Abstract Starch based films limit their application due to highly hydrophilic nature and poor mechanical properties. This problem was sought to be overcome by forming a nanocomposite of Thermoplastic starch (TPS) and Nano-Cellulose fibers (NCF). NCF was successfully synthesised from short stable cotton fibres by a chemo-mechanical process. TPS/NCF composite films were prepared by solution casting method, and their characterizations were done in terms of differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), m...

Abstract This study investigated the effects of sodium hypochlorite oxidation and a heat–moisture treatment of potato starch on the physicochemical, pasting and textural properties of potato starches in addition to the water vapour permeability (WVP) and mechanical properties of potato starch films produced from these starches. The carbonyl contents, carboxyl contents, swelling power, solubility, pasting properties and gel texture of the native, oxidised and heat–moisture treated (HMT) starches ...

Abstract Films composed of cassava starch, chitosan and glycerol were produced by blown extrusion and employing a design for constrained surfaces and mixtures. The effects of the components of the mixture on the mechanical properties, water vapor permeability (WVP) and opacity of the films were studied. According to the models generated by the design, the concentration of starch had a positive effect in all properties. The plasticizer glycerol and its interactions with other components had a pos...

Cassava starch (ST)-konjac glucomannan (KGM) blend films were prepared and their thermal, rheological, mechanical, moisture sorption properties and water vapour transmission rate were determined. Response surface methodology was employed for the preparation of films using different levels of ST, KGM and glycerol. All the filmogenic solutions exhibited shear thinning behaviour. Apparent viscosity and the dynamic rheological properties of filmogenic solutions varied considerably with KGM content. ...

Waxy maize starch was hydrolyzed with sulfuric acid in aqueous solution. The remaining starch granules after acid hydrolysis were characterized by TEM and wide-angle XRD. Starch nanocrystals with size between 40 to 80 nm and relative crystallinity of 63% were obtained after 6 days of hydrolysis. Starch nanocrystals/carboxymethyl chitosan composite films were prepared by casting-evaporation method. When the starch nanocrystals content was below 30 wt%, the filler dispersed uniformly in the carbox...

Abstract Different Andean crops were used to obtain starches not previously reported in literature as raw material for the production of biodegradable polymers. The twelve starches obtained were used to prepare biodegradable films by casting. Water and glycerol were used as plasticizers. The mechanical properties of the starch based films were assessed by means of tensile tests. Compost tests and FTIR tests were carried out to assess biodegradability of films. The results show that the mechanica...

Kudzu starch–chitosan composite films were prepared by combining 2% (w/v) gelatinized kudzu starch and 2% (w/v) chitosan solution together. Effects of acids (acetic acid, lactic acid and malic acid) to dissolve chitosan on properties of the composite films were investigated. Fourier-transform infrared spectra showed that kudzu starch and chitosan could form miscible films. X-ray diffraction data indicated that the crystalline of each single component was suppressed after film forming process. Th...

Abstract The effect of polymeric proanthocyanidin (PPC, degree of polymerization was 8.61 ± 0.12) on the physicochemical and in vitro digestion properties of rice, potato and pea starch was investigated. Rapid viscosity analysis demonstrated that the peak, trough and final viscosity of rice and pea starch increased, but those of potato starch decreased when gelatinized with 5% PPC. Differential scanning calorimetry data showed PPC retarded the gelatinization of rice and potato starch and reduced...

Natural biopolymers are an interesting resource for edible films production, as they are environmentally friendly packaging materials. The possibilities of the application of main animal proteins and natural polysaccharides are considered in the review, including the sources, structure, and limitations of usage. The main ways for overcoming the limitations caused by the physico-chemical properties of biopolymers are also discussed, including composites approaches, plasticizers, and the addition ...

Abstract Bacterial breeding is the main cause of food perishability, which is harmful to human health. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are one of the most widely used antimicrobial agents, but they are easy to release and cause cumulative toxicity. In this work, with corn stalk as green reductant and GO as template, a simple electrostatic self-assembled sandwich-like chitosan (CS) wrapped rGO@AgNPs nanocomposite film (CS/rGO@AgNPs) was synthesized to achieve stabilizing and controlled-release of Ag...

Abstract Food industries are one of the largest importers of synthetic polymers for its commercial packaging. Synthetic polymers, including polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene, are some of the widely established food packaging materials. Extensive barrier properties, flexibility, and availability of raw materials are the advantages of synthetic polymers. However, lack of biodegradability, scarce recycling rates, and the migration of hazardous compounds into food are the major challenges...

Environmental concern has increased the research in development of biodegradable packaging. Although there are many reports about starch films, their physicochemical properties need to be improved, and the introduction of an inorganic compound is an alternative to be applied. However, there are few reports about the development of biodegradable hybrid organic–inorganic films for food packaging. Therefore, the preparation of biodegradable films was proposed by using sol–gel and casting techniques...
