INTRODUCTION Isolated vasculitis of the bladder is extremely rare. The main causes of which are auto-immune diseases and occasionally infections. Corticosteroid therapy plays a central role in treatment in the majority of cases.

Objective The Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics (SLICC) group revised and validated the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) classification criteria in order to improve clinical relevance, meet stringent methodology requirements, and incorporate new knowledge regarding the immunology of SLE. Methods The classification criteria were derived from a set of 702 expert-rated patient scenarios. Recursive partitioning was used to derive an initial r...

We describe the main characteristics and treatment of urogenital manifestations in patients with Wegener granulomatosis (WG). We conducted a retrospective review of the charts of 11 patients with WG. All patients were men, and their median age at WG diagnosis was 53 years (range, 21-70 yr). Urogenital involvement was present at onset of WG in 9 cases (81%), it was the first clinical evidence of WG in 2 cases (18%), and was a symptom of WG relapse in 6 cases (54%). Symptomatic urogenital involvem...

Objective This study was carried out to determine the characteristics of lupus cystitis and to compare those of Japanese cases with those of non-Japanese cases. We also report a novel therapy for lupus cystitis refractory to corticosteroid. Methods For the literature search, published reports on lupus cystitis were searched by MEDLINE and ICHUSHI WEB. The inclusion criterion was interstitial cystitis, fulfilling the SLE classification criteria of American College of Rheumatology in 1997 and with...

Lupus cystitis is a rare complication associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This rare disorder has been reported mainly from East Asia, especially from Japan. In this study, we describe a patient with lupus cystitis and review 37 reported cases in Japan. Bowel symptoms preceded urinary symptoms in 13 of 37 (35%) patients, whereas five patients complained of only bowel symptoms. Hydronephrosis was detected in 34 of 37 patients (92%). The possibility of lupus cystitis should be consi...

The presence of a true vasculitis is difficult to discern in some of the more common manifestations of Behcet’s syndrome, like the papulopustular lesions of the skin. On the other hand, a true vasculitis is seen in all vessel sizes in the majority of the patients. The pathogenesis is not yet known. A Th1-type inflammatory reaction is seen like in some other primary vasculitides. However, in contrast to other vasculitides, granuloma formation is absent. Behcet’s syndrome is unique among the vascu...

Abstract Background The pathogenic significance of antineutrophilic cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) in Wegener's granulomatosis is controversial. Their presence is influenced by the extent, severity, and activity of the disease at the time of sampling. The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of ANCA in patients with active Wegener's granulomatosis and to assess the influence of disease severity on test results. Methods Baseline serum samples from the 180 participants in a multic...
