Abstract Fufang Ejiao Syrup (FES) is a widely used immune-boosting Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in Eastern Asian countries. This study attempts to investigate the bioactive compounds in FES. First, FES extract was separated into fractions to facilitate the investigation and 72 compounds were identified using LC–MSn. Subsequently, Immune-enhancement effects of FES and its components were investigated on bone marrow cells and neuroprotective effects against H2O2 induced oxidative damage were evaluated in SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells and bEnd.3. Our results indicated that fraction 3, 5, 6 and 8 showed significant improvements on immune function, while several fractions had cytoprotective effects against H2O2-induced oxidative injury. Jionoside A1 isolated from Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata displayed dose dependent immune-enhancement activity. 20(R)-ginsenoside Rg3 could protect bEnd.3 against oxidative damage. Furthermore, echinacoside, jionoside A1, vitexin-2-O-rhamnoside, acteoside and isoacteoside possessed moderate protective activities on H2O2-treated SH-SY5Y cells. In conclusion, our study provided both chemical and biological evidences to support clinical application of FES.

Abstract Aims We aimed to investigate the effects of echinacoside (ECH) on hematopoietic function in 5-FU-induced bone marrow depression mice. Main methods In vitro , after stimulation with ECH, the proliferation ability of bone marrow (BM) cells and bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) derived from myelosuppression mice were assessed by CCK8 assay and morphology, respectively. In vivo , 5-FU-induced myelosuppression or control mice were intragastrically administrated with either ECH at 15 mg/kg or...

In comparison with monotherapy in western medicine, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) advocates combinational therapy for treating diseases and TCM formula is a representative for this approach. Despite of extensive clinical applications of TCM formulae, knowledge about their pharmacological activities, mechanisms of action and cellular targets remains limited. A main contributing factor to these unanswered questions is unavailability of chemical compositions and their contents in the formulae....

Abstract Chlorogenic acid (CGA) is a polyphenol commonly existed in fruits and vegetables with a variety of bioactivities. To increase its stability and potential broader industrial application, CGA/cyclodextrin (CD) complexes were prepared using β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and its derivative (2-hydroxypropyl)-β-cyclodextrin (2-HP-β-CD). Their inclusion complexation behavior and characterization were investigated by FT-IR, XRD, SEM, and 1 H NMR spectroscopy. The morphologic and spectral studies indica...

Ginseng herbal medicine has been known to have beneficial effects on improving human health. We investigated whether red ginseng extract (RGE) has preventive effects on influenza A virus infection in vivo and in vitro. RGE was found to improve survival of human lung epithelial cells upon influenza virus infection. Also, RGE treatment reduced the expression of pro-inflammatory genes (IL-6, IL-8) probably in part through interference with the formation of reactive oxygen species by influenza A vir...

Seven new orsellinic acid esters, 1-7, and four known compounds were isolated from the solid, fermented rice culture of Chaetomium globosporum (cib-132). Their structures were elucidated by 1D- and 2D-NMR spectra, and the relative configuration of compound 1 was determined by X-ray crystallographic analysis.

Abstract Root of Panax notoginseng (Burk.) F.H. Chen ( Sanqi in Chinese) is one of traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) based functional food. Saponins are the major bioactive components. The shortage of reference compounds or chemical standards is one of the main bottlenecks for quality control of TCMs. A novel strategy, i.e. standardized reference extract based qualification and single calibrated components directly quantitative estimation of multiple analytes, was proposed to easily and effec...

Abstract Various neurodegenerative diseases e.g. , Alzheimer's affect many elderly people that eventually leads to disability and premature death. No effective treatment for these neurodegenerative diseases has been developed yet. Oxidative stress-mediated neurodegeneration is one of the key pathophysiological factors involved in these diseases. Since numerous botanic components are well-known potent antioxidants, in this study, we aim to examine the neuroprotective effects of phytochemical comp...

Martynoside (MAR) is a bioactive glycoside of Rehmannia glutinosa, a traditional Chinese herb frequently prescribed for treating chemotherapy-induced pancytopenia. Despite its clinical usage in China for thousands of years, the mechanism of MAR's hematopoietic activity and its impact on chemotherapy-induced antitumor activity are still unclear. Here, we showed that MAR protected ex vivo bone marrow cells from 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-induced cell death and inflammation response by down-regulating t...

Donkeys (Equus asinus) face a global crisis. The health, welfare, and even survival of donkeys are being compromised as the demand for their skins increases. It is driven by the production of ejiao, a traditional Chinese remedy believed by some to have medicinal properties. It is estimated that the ejiao industry currently requires approximately 4.8 million donkey skins per year. Since there is no productive chain for donkey skin production outside of China, the activity is extractive and has re...

Phenylethanoid glycosides (PhGs) are compounds made of phenylethyl alcohol, caffeic acid and glycosyl moieties. The first published references about phenylethanoid glycosides concerned the isolation of echinacoside from Echinaceu ungustifolia (Asteraceae) in 1950 and verbascoside from Verbascum sinuatum (Scrophulariaceae) in 1963. Over the past 60 years, many compounds with these structural characteristics have been isolated from natural sources, and most of these compounds possess significant b...

Panax notoginseng (Burk.) F. H. Chen is a medicinal herb used to treat blood disorders since ancient times, of which the steamed form exhibits the anti-anemia effect and acts with a “blood-tonifying” function according to traditional use. The present study aimed to investigate the anti-anemia effect and underlying mechanism of steamed Panax notogensing (SPN) on mice with blood deficiency syndrome (BDS) induced by chemotherapy. BDS was induced in mice by cyclophosphamide and acetylphenylhydrazine...

Abstract Ginseng has been used as a popular herbal medicine in East Asia for at least two millennia. However, 20(R)-ginseng saponins, one class of important rare ginsenosides, are rare in natural products. 20(R)-ginseng saponins are generally prepared by chemical epimerization and microbial transformation from 20(S)-isomers. The C20 configuration of 20(R)-ginseng saponins are usually determined by 13C NMR and X-ray single-crystal diffraction. 20(R)-ginseng saponins have antitumor, antioxidative,...
