Currently, there is a need to explore the consequences of different types of protein-anthocyanin complexations, as well as possible changes in the nutrition and allergenicity of formed complexes. Here, we systematically investigated the covalent and non-covalent interactions between cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (C3G) and two major milk proteins, α-casein (α-CN) and β-lactoglobulin (β-LG). Fluorescence quenching data showed that, under non-covalent conditions, C3G quenched the fluorescence of two prote...

Jellyfish skin polysaccharides (JSP) were isolated from Rhopilema esculentum Kishinouye and contained 55.11 % polysaccharides and 2.26 % uronic acid. To examine the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and immunomodulatory activities of JSP in vivo, C57BL/6 mice were induced ulcerative colitis by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) and the roles of dietary JSP supplementation in modulating colitis were explored. JSP supplementation reduced the symptoms of colitis in mice, increased colon length, protected go...

Bioactive peptides are a class of peptides with special physiological functions and have potential applications in human health and disease prevention. Bioactive peptides have gained much research attention because they affect the cardiovascular, endocrine, immune, and nervous systems. Recent research has reported that bioactive peptides are of great value for physiological function regulation, including antioxidation, anti-hypertension, antithrombosis, antibacterial properties, anti-cancer, ant...

Bacterial infections and multidrug resistance can seriously endanger the health and lives of humans, therefore the development of novel and efficient antibacterial strategies and drugs is urgently needed. Herein, a series of highly biocompatible lysine modified enzymatic hydrolysis lignins (EHL-Lys-x) were synthesized using the Mannich reaction. The sterilizing efficiency of EHL-Lys-2.0 against S. aureus and E. coli at 20 mg mL-1 is 93% and 50%, respectively, which is 26% higher than pure EHL. Q...

Cynomorium songaricum is a medicinal, edible, and endangered plant species. Since inflorescences are not considered medicinal parts, their discard causes a waste of resources. To expand the medicinal uses of C. songaricum, we evaluated their chemistry and pharmacology by applying widely targeted metabolomics, network pharmacology, and molecular docking. Widely targeted metabolomics results indicated chemical diversity in C. songaricum with 599 compounds. Among them, 280 compounds were different ...

The benefits of galactooligosaccharides (GOS) in neonates have been confirmed. However, the effects of nutritional programming by maternal GOS intervention on microbial colonization and intestinal development in the offspring remain unclear. In the present study, late gestational sows were fed with GOS (10 g d-1 added into the diet) or not until parturition, and the performances, immune status, microbiota composition and intestinal barriers in their piglets on day 21 were compared. GOS supplemen...

This study proposed to investigate the effect of Ilex paraguariensis infusion on the absorption of non-heme iron in hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) patients with the HFE genotype. A two-way randomized, controlled, crossover trial was conducted on patients, aged 29-69 years, undergoing maintenance therapy. Fourteen HFE-HH patients ingested a meal containing 11.4 mg iron and 200 mL either of water (control) or of Ilex paraguariensis leaf infusion. The beverages were offered in random order, at int...

Astaxanthin (AX) is a xanthophyll carotenoid that can effectively inhibit the production of peroxides and thereby protect the body from oxidative damage. In recent years, AX had been shown to have anti-aging properties, both in vivo and in vitro. However, the underlying mechanisms by which AX regulates senescence related proteins and signaling pathways remain unclear. Therefore, we used Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) model binding proteomics to reveal AX anti-aging activity and its molecula...

Caseinophosphopeptides (CPPs) are a group of bioactive polypeptides hydrolyzed from caseins. Theaflavin-3,3'-digallate (TF-3) is a characteristic biofunctional polyphenol in black tea. In the present study, the interactions between CPPs and TF-3 were systematically investigated with fluorescence quenching, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D), circular dichroism (CD), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Both fluorescence quenching and QCM-D studies demonstrated th...
