Patrinia villosa (Thunb.) Juss (P. villosa), a perennial herb, is widely used as a medicinal plant in Chinese folk. This study aims to isolate and identify the chemical constituents from P. villosa and evaluate their antioxidant activity. Normal silica column chromatography, ODS silica column chromatography, Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography and semi-preparative HPLC methods were used to obtain a new compound named 3-n-pentadecyl-4'-methoxyluteolin (1) and two known compounds including luteol...

Current research involves extraction, identification and detoxification of mycotoxins from ten dry fruit samples. Mycotoxins were identified by high performance thin layer chromatography followed by physical and biological detoxification, analysed by HPLC. Three fungal species were observed after isolation including, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus and Fussarium sp. HP-TLC analysis revealed the presence of mycotoxin, aflatoxin B1 ranging from 0.000303-0.03636 mg/kg in all samples. Results ...
The antihypoxic effect of the Nepeta multifida L. dry extract was studied in experiments on white Wistar rats. The life span of animals was determined against the background of acute hypoxias: hypercapnic, hemic, and histotoxic ones. Using the model of acute hypobaric hypoxia/reoxygenation there was evaluated the content of ATP, lactic and pyruvic acids, TBA-active products, reduced glutathione, catalase activity in brain tissue. On the model of acute hypobaric hypoxia/reoxygenation, the content...

Staphylococcus aureus is considered the most common opportunistic pathogen in humans, capable of forming biofilm, increasing the chances of antibiotic resistance and causes several chronic diseases. Biodiversity is a source of inspiration in the search for new agents against these microorganisms. Hitherto, the efficacy of Hypericum sp. extracts as an antibacterial agent has already been demonstrated against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. In this study, we observed that until 4 µg/mL, ...

We evaluated the chemical composition, toxicity, and antibacterial activity of Schinus terebinthifolia (SCH), Eugenia uniflora (EUG), Persicaria hydropiperoides (PER), Equisetum hyemale (EQU), Solidago chilensis (SOL), and Baccharis trimera (BRA). These plants were tested (7.5-0.01 mg/mL) against Gram-positive (G+; n = 32) and Gram-negative (G-; n = 26) isolates from animals (M07-A9, CLSI). Antibiogram (disk diffusion), chromatographic analysis (UPLC), and toxicity assay (HET-CAM) were also perf...

A series of schiartane C29 nortriterpenoids with 5/5/7/6/5 membered consecutive rings (1‒5) with an unique schinortriterpenoid skeleton including a new, kadcoccilactone V (1), together with four known ones (2‒5) and three known triterpenoids (6‒8) were identified from stems of Kadsura coccinea (Lem.) A. C. Smith. The structures of 1 and known compounds were elucidated by interpretation of 1D and 2D NMR, and HR-ESI-MS data as well as comparing those data in the literature. All the isolated compou...

Phyllaciduloids E (1) and F (2), two new cleistanthane diterpenoids, were isolated from the leaves of Phyllanthus acidus (L.) Skeels (Phyllanthaceae). Their planar structures were established by spectroscopic analysis and comparison with literature values. The relative configurations of phyllaciduloids E and F were confirmed by DFT-NMR chemical shift calculations and subsequent CP3 probability methods. Phyllaciduloids E and F were evaluated for their cytotoxicity. However, no significant activit...

A new alkaloid named zhebeisine (1), together with four known compounds, eduardine (2), zhebeirine (3), isoverticine (4), and verticine (5), was isolated from the bulbs of Fritillaria thunbergii Miq. The structure of the new compound was elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic methods and the in vitro biological activities of it were evaluated as well. Compound 1 features a veratramine skeleton with a rare 6/6/5/6/6/6 fused-ring system, representing the first reported veratramine-type...

The effects of the lichenicolous fungus Heterocephalacria bachmannii on the antimicrobial potential of the lichen Cladonia foliacea demonstrated that the extracts investigated have antimicrobial potential against gram-positive and negative bacteria, and yeast, and inhibit the germination of fungal spores. Inhibition activity varied considerably depending on the extract, the bacterial species, and the absence or presence of H. bachmannii; unparasitised C. foliacea has a higher antimicrobial activ...

This study was conducted to determine the anti-cancer activity of 3-O-α-L-arabinosyl oleanolic acid (3-O-L-AO), a triterpenoid saponin, isolated from the leaves of Schumacheria castaneifolia Vahl in breast cancer stem cells (bCSCs) grown in hypoxia. Anti-proliferative effects of 3-O-L-AO in bCSCs were determined using WST-1 assay. Real-time PCR was employed to evaluate the effects of 3-O-L-AO on apoptosis. Compound 3-O-L-AO exerted greater anti-proliferative effect in bCSCs grown under hypoxic c...
