A high-fat diet (HFD) causes hyperlipidemia, which worsens disturbances in bile acid (BA) metabolism and gut microbiota. This study aimed to investigate the regulation of flavonoids from whole-grain oat (FO) on BA metabolism and gut microbiota in HFD-induced hyperlipidemic mice. The experiment results showed that FO improved serum lipid profiles and decreased body weight and lipid deposition in HFD-fed mice. Through real-time qualitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and Western blot assay...

Rice bran protein hydrolysates (RBPH) pretreated with high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) covalently interacted with ferulic acid (FA) (0.5 to 2.5 mg/mL) under alkaline conditions. The structural and functional properties of the conjugates were investigated. The results revealed that the FA binding equivalent on RBPH increased from 6.03 to 207.64 nmol/mg. FTIR spectral analysis indicated that the content of α-helix increased, whereas the contents of β-sheet, β-turn, and random coil decreased. The su...

The isomeric nature of monoterpenyl glycosides makes unambiguous identification of intact glycosides difficult. As a result, it is challenging to relate the changes in free monoterpenol concentrations to the corresponding glycosides during wine fermentation and storage. In this study, we isolated and identified linalool, nerol, and geraniol monoterpenyl glycosides fromVitis viniferacv. Riesling grapes through fractionation followed by acid or enzyme hydrolysis. Changes in the composition of iden...

OfChi-h, a lepidopteran-exclusive glycoside hydrolase family 18 (GH18) chitinase from the agricultural insect pest Ostrinia furnacalis, is a promising molecular target candidate for pest control and management. Berberine (BER), a traditional Chinese medicine, binds to a wide variety of glycosyl hydrolases via an identical mechanism, showing potential as a pesticide lead compound. In this work, we found that BER was a moderate inhibitor of OfChi-h with a Ki of 16.1 μM. To improve its efficacy, a ...

There is growing evidence that prevention of metabolic syndrome (MS) by dietary fibers is intricately linked to gut microbiota. In the present work, the mice were fed a high-fat diet (HFD) and orally treated with yeast β-glucan to further examine the effects of β-glucan on MS and gut microbiota and the potential relationship between gut microbiota and its activity. After intervention for 10 weeks, it was found that the treatment of yeast β-glucan could significantly improve the HFD-induced MS. F...

With the basic understanding and broad application prospects of luminescent materials, the emission mechanism of unconventional luminescent agents has been revealed gradually. Here, we report a non-conjugated biomass material, oat β-glucan (oat-β-Glu), which actually does not emit light in a dilute solution but emits significantly when forming aggregates. Inherently visible emission of oat-β-Glu from the concentrated solutions and solid state could be observed. In addition, we have observed room...

As a natural sesquiterpene compound with numerous biological activities, patchoulol has extensive applications in the cosmetic industry and potential usage in pharmaceuticals. Although several patchoulol-producing microbial strains have been constructed, the low productivity still hampers large-scale fermentation. Escherichia coli possesses the ease of genetic manipulation and simple nutritional requirements and does not comprise competing pathways for the farnesyl diphosphate (FPP) precursor, s...

On the basis of our previous studies on the antiviral mechanism against tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and structure-activity relationship of phenanthroindolizidine alkaloids, a series of 9-substituted tylophorine derivatives targeting TMV RNA were designed, synthesized, and assessed for their anti-TMV activities. The bioassay results indicated that most of these compounds showed good in vivo anti-TMV activities, and some of them displayed higher activity than that of commercial ribavirin. Especiall...

Iron is an essential microelement in plants that is involved in several growth processes. The use of herbicides may cause the abnormal aggregation of iron in leaves, but the regulatory mechanisms underlying this phenomenon remain unclear. Here, we show that chiral herbicide (R)-dichlorprop ((R)-DCPP) triggers ferroptosis-like death in Arabidopsis thaliana. (R)-DCPP led to reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and iron aggregation, and these processes were iron dependent. Under (R)-DCPP trea...
