• A novel viscoelastic N 2 foam for chemical enhanced oil recovery was developed. • Oil recovery efficiency of N 2 foam was evaluated in Xinjiang Oilfield conditions. • The mechanism of N 2 foam stability was explained by the viscoelasticity theory.
