Abstract This study examines the merits of esterification of waste cooking oil to reduce its acidic content for use as a rejuvenator for aged asphalt. It further examines how acidic compounds in bitumen increases the moisture susceptibility of bituminous composites made from siliceous stones and bitumen. While some acidic compounds are inherent in bitumen, the recent widespread use of bio-modifiers such as waste cooking (vegetable) oil has further increased the acidic compounds in bio-modified b...

Recognizing that bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) may still take years to mature, this study focuses on another photosynthesis-based, negative-carbon technology that is readier to implement in China: biomass intermediate pyrolysis poly-generation (BIPP). Here we find that a BIPP system can be profitable without subsidies, while its national deployment could contribute to a 61% reduction of carbon emissions per unit of gross domestic product in 2030 compared to 2005 and result ad...

Abstract Pyrolysis is a green method for waste tires processing with aim to produce oil. However, the resulting oil contains a relatively large amount of sulfur and nitrogen compounds, limiting its direct use. Therefore, this study aimed to improve properties of the waste tire pyrolysis oil (TPO) particular to reduce the N and S contents. The combination of tetralin and H2 was employed to provide hydrogen source to enhance the hydrotreatment of the TPO. Effects of catalyst type (AC, Ir/C, Pt/C, ...

Abstract Understanding the migration and conversion of nitrogen in wood-based panels (WPBs) during pyrolysis is fundamentally important for potentially transforming the N-containing species into valuable material-based products. This review firstly summarizes the commonly used methods for examining N evolution during the WBPs pyrolysis before probing into the association between the wood and adhesives. The potential effects of wood-adhesive interaction on the pyrolysis process are subsequently an...

Abstract This paper examines the merits of using microbially desulfurized rubber to enhance theperformance ofbituminous pavements and promote recycling of scrap tires. To prepare microbially desulfurized rubber, we incubated crumb rubber obtained from waste tiresin medium with microbes from waste activated sludge. The concentration of sulfate was monitored during the treatment process and desulfurization was estimated to be about34%.Microbially desulfurized crumb rubber (MDR) was then added to b...

Abstract Biomass is an important product of bio-material pyrolysis, which can be used as an asphalt modifier or a rejuvenator for an aged asphalt binder. This paper synthetically reviews types of biomass, preparation and properties of bio-oils, preparation of bio-asphalt and the conventional, rheological, and chemical properties of bio-modified and bio-rejuvenated asphalts. Finally, the life cycle assessment was compared between the conventional asphalt and bio-asphalt pavements. The finding fro...

Abstract This paper introduces a new bio-rejuvenator made from a blend of high-protein algae and high-lipid animal manure and studies its interaction with aged bitumen molecules to revitalize aged asphalt. True revitalization requires restoring not only the chemical balance but also the molecular conformation. Therefore, rejuvenators should be able to de-agglomerate oxidized asphaltenes while compensating for components that are lost during aging. This study uses a balanced feedstock to control ...

Abstract The economic and environmental benefits of using recycled asphalt materials continue to motivate agencies to increase their proportion in new pavement construction and maintenance and rehabilitation activities, but the resulting reduced cracking resistance remains an engineering performance challenge. The addition of recycling agents is one of the strategies to mitigate this issue caused by the increased stiffness and brittleness of the recycled mixture. This study explored the mechanis...

Abstract Forestry residue is an important lignocellulosic feedstock for bioenergy production. This study estimated the potential forestry residue production (PFRP) in 31 provincial regions in mainland China. The PFRP increased from 220.48 million tons (Mt) in 2007 to 257.44 Mt in 2016. The average annual PFRP between 2014 and 2016 was 254.69 Mt, which comprised 228.01 Mt of wood residue, 22.86 Mt of bamboo residue, and 3.82 Mt of herbaceous fruit plant residue. For the wood residue, forest pruni...
