Placenta accreta (PA) and its variants are disorders of abnormal placentation that lead to abnormal postpartum uterine-placental separation. PA is classified as accreta, increta and percreta, depending on the depth of penetration of the chorionic villi into the myometrium, (Fig. 1) with placenta percreta being the least common but most severe form of PA [1]. The rate of cesarean delivery has increased worldwide in recent decades. [2] As the cesarean rate increases, so does the incidence of placenta accreta.
