Abstract A porous medium model was used for numerical and experimental investigations of a system that includes a tube bundle inside a steam turbine surface condenser. A condensation model was developed to predict the condenser performance using user-defined functions (UDFs) in the commercial computational fluid dynamics software FLUENT. The shell-side pressure drop around the tube bundle is an important indicator for the condenser performance and can be used to compare different condenser-tube ...

AbstractThe steam condenser plays an essential part in conventional and nuclear power generation. It is often neglected, by not being inspected regularly, by not maintaining tubes in a clean condition and not ensuring the cooling water is in a suitable chemical state to preserve tube cleanliness. Consequently, its efficiency suffers and if tubes begin to fail then an expensive episode of repairs and unreliability becomes apparent. This paper explains the role that the condenser plays and describ...

Abstract In this case study, the failure cause of a condenser brass tube in 150 MW thermal power units was investigated. The features of erosion were observed by macro and micro observations, and the necessary conditions for erosion were satisfied: higher flow rate, turbulence and silts contained in cooling water. The dezincification–corrosion was also verified in this case study by EDS analysis. Given all of that, the failed condenser brass tube is considered to be caused by the synergism of er...

Abstract The stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of the pre-immersed tin brass heat exchanger tube was investigated using slow strain rate testing (SSRT) in an environment containing ammonia. Tubular specimens were exposed at room temperature to this environment for different time prior to straining. The brass tube operated for longer time exhibited more severe SSC cracking and larger dezincified area than that of the tube operated for shorter time. Intergranular SSC was observed in the fracture sur...

Abstract Failure analysis was carried out on a brass tube that leaked during service in a heat exchanger. The leaked tube had numerous cracks. The service fluid at the tube side is cooling water, while it is lube oil at the shell side. Microscopic examinations and energy dispersive spectroscopic analyses were carried out on the brass tube to understand the root cause of the failure. Microscopic examination of the tube cross sections revealed that the cracks initiated from the areas that suffered...

Abstract Failure investigation was carried out on a titanium condenser tube that suffered from a large size perforation. The environment at the shell side is hydrocarbon with low pressure steam, while it is seawater at the tube side. The tube was totally plugged with alkaline scale, consisting of calcium carbonate and calcium sulfate. The investigation revealed that in the initial stages of fouling, the titanium tube suffered from erosion–corrosion damage due to the presence of turbulent flow co...

This chapter summarizes stress corrosion cracking of copper and copper-based alloys in different chemical, thermal, and electrochemical environments. The chapter begins with description of different copper-based alloys and their common application. A description of different operating SCC mechanisms for the copper-based alloys is provided. Information regarding the chemical, thermal and electrochemical conditions that could induce SCC of the copper and copper-based alloys and additional details ...

This paper presents finding of a failure investigation on a heat exchanger tubes in a desalination plant. Fabricated from Type 90-10 copper-nickel alloy, the tubes experienced sever corrosion after one year of operation. Leaks were observed due to pitting attack requiring repairs and eventual replacement of the cupronickel tubes. The cause of the failure was determined by conducting a physical inspection, and performing macro and micro examinations. The failure of the tubes was mainly attributed...

Abstract The shell and tube heat exchanger failed before 5 years of operation. The failure was caused by pits on the tube outside surface developing until its perforation. Inside the Cu-DHP tubes in soft temper a cooling agent circulated to cool down industrial water at the shell side from 16 to 4 °C. The cooled water was hard, rich in chloride ions with relatively low sulphate ions concentration and pH ranging from 4 to 7. The leaking tubes were subject to standard metallographic examination, h...
