ABSTRACTBy means of creep property measurement and microstructure observation, the influence of element Ru on the microstructure and creep behaviour of single crystal nickel-based superalloy is investigated. The results show that the plate-like μ phase is precipitated along {111} plane of the Ru-free alloy during thermal exposure at 1080°C and creep at 980°C. And the precipitation of μ phase in the alloy with 6(wt)%Mo and 6(wt)%W may be restrained by adding 2% Ru element. Compared to Ru-free all...

Abstract We propose a general theory of Ostwald ripening for prolate spheroidal particles in a nonideal nondilute multicomponent alloy. The diffusion problem of a growing or shrinking particle is solved using prolate spheroidal coordinates under the assumption that the spheroidal particle has a constant Wulff shape. The result shows that the diffusional growth rate increases with an increasing particle aspect ratio due to the increased surface area per volume. The anisotropic interfacial energy ...

Abstract Microstructural and chemical heterogeneities may exacerbate the high-temperature mechanical properties of single crystal turbine blades. The evolution of microstructure and compositional homogeneity of an as-cast low Re-containing multicomponent DD6 alloy during through progression of heat treatment was detailedly studied. Using optical microscope, field emission gun scanning electron microscope, electron probe microanalysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and complementary thermody...

To study the influence of aging heat treatments on the microstructure of single crystal superalloys with high content of refractory elements and optimal the aging heat treatment regimes, a single crystal superalloy containing 22 wt% refractory elements was investigated. Results show that for the experimental alloy, even the homogenization–solution heat treatment for 25 h cannot homogenize the alloying elements completely. During primary aging heat treatment, γ′ phase grows larger and turns to re...

Abstract The deformation behaviors of rectangular-parallelepiped micropillars fabricated from [001]-oriented Ni-based superalloys with negative and positive lattice misfits, respectively, were investigated with respect to the specimen size. The yield stresses of the larger specimens (side length L > ∼2 μm) of both considered alloy types were found to be nearly independent of the size, while the smaller specimens (L

According to Lifshitz, Slyozov, and Wagner (LSW) and Trans-Interface Diffusion-Controlled (TICD) theoretical models, this paper reports the microstructure and its coarsening behavior of γ′ metastable-coherent precipitates in concentration gradient of Ni-13.75Ti (at%)/Ni generated by diffusion couple. The coarsening of precipitates was evaluated in two different Ti contents (R1-11.4Ti (at%) and R2-13Ti (at%)) generated along the concentration gradient and includes average size, size distributions...

This work discusses the effects of alloying on the coarsening behaviour of the L12 ordered γ′ phase and the structure of the γ/γ′ interfaces in three Co-Al-W base superalloys aged at ∼90 °C below the respective solvus temperatures: Co-7Al-7W, Co-10Al-5W-2Ta and Co-7Al-7W-20Ni (at.%). The coarsening kinetics are adequately characterised by the classical Lifshitz-Slyozov-Wagner model for Ostwald ripening. Co-7Al-7W exhibited much slower coarsening than its quaternary derivatives. Alloying can be e...

Abstract The creep properties of nickel-based single crystal superalloy with [001] orientation was investigated at different test conditions. The microstructure evolution of γ′ phase, TCP phase and dislocation characteristic after creep rupture was studied by SEM and TEM. The results show that the alloy has excellent creep properties. Two different types of creep behavior can be shown in the creep curves. The primary creep is characterized by the high amplitude at test conditions of (760 °C, 600...

Abstract The interrupted creep tests ( e =0.1%) of a fourth and a sixth generation Ni-base single crystals, i.e. MX-4/PWA 1497 and TMS-238, were conducted at 800 °C and 735 MPa along [001]. TMS-238 had a creep time more than sixty times longer than MX-4/PWA 1497. Microstructural observations showed that stacking faults (SFs) sheared both the γ matrix and γ΄ precipitates in MX-4/PWA 1497, however, SFs sheared only the γ matrix in TMS-238. The factors that affect the creep deformation are discusse...

The creep behavior of a single crystal superalloy is investigated at the dendritic scale. The chemical segregation in the dendritic structure is correlated to strain heterogeneities after creep experiments on ultrathin specimens. It is shown that primary dendrite axes have a strengthening effect.

In this study, the spectral emissivity of aeronautical alloy DD6 at eight temperatures (473 K, 523 K, 573 K, 623 K, 673 K, 723 K, 773 K and 823 K) over the spectral range from 3 μm to 20 μm is systematically studied under argon condition. The multi-temperature calibration method is adopted to accurately obtain the FTIR spectrometer response, and then the improved method that eliminates the disturbances caused by background radiation is used for spectral emissivity determination. The effects of t...

Abstract Nickel-based single crystal superalloy DD6 was diffusion bonded in vacuum at 1170 °C under 55 MPa for 2 − 6 h. Two processes, direct bonding and bonding with interlayer, were designed for comparison. A pure 4 μm nickel (Ni) foil was selected for the interlayer. The joint strength was measured via shear test, whereas the joint microstructure and element distribution were analyzed via scanning electron microscope, electron probe analyzer and transmission electron microscope. The results i...
