Abstract Cetane number (CN) is one of the key factors of biodiesels and other diesel fuels. It is an indicator of ignition speed and required compression for ignition. CN estimation of biodiesel based on fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) composition was the main goal of this work. Application of artificial neural network (ANN) combined with particle swarm optimization (PSO) and teaching-learning based optimization (TLBO) is discussed in this communication. A number of 232 fuel samples was derived ...

Abstract Asphaltene precipitation phenomenon which exhibits considerable influence on enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes is taken into account as an important matter in the petroleum and chemical engineering processes/operational units. Available mathematical methods to investigate crucial aspects of this production problem (e.g., precipitation conditions and determination of amount of precipitated asphaltene) seem difficult to be implemented at a variety of process conditions and oil propert...

Abstract Eighteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in surficial sediments along a marine transect from the North Pacific into the Arctic Ocean. The highest average Σ 18 PAHs concentrations were observed along the continental slope of the Canada Basin in the Arctic (68.3 ± 8.5 ng g −1 dw), followed by sediments in the Chukchi Sea shelf (49.7 ± 21.2 ng g −1 dw) and Bering Sea (39.5 ± 11.3 ng g −1 dw), while the Bering Strait (16.8 ± 7.1 ng g −1 dw) and Central Arctic Ocean sed...

AbstractThe recent literature describing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in air, water, soil and sediment, waste sludge, biomonitoring, toxicity, are reviewed. Aspects of sampling, sample preparations such as extraction of PAHs are discussed and analytical methods used are also reviewed. Developments on direct measurement techniques, such as ultraviolet absorption spectrometry and synchronous luminescence, are noted. This review also discusses the microbial PAH-remediation and PAH-degrad...

Asphaltene precipitation in oil operations contributes to serious technical and non-technical issues, which is affected by reservoir conditions such as pressure, temperature, dilution ratio, and type of diluent. In this work, a mathematical correlation is introduced to forecast the weight percent (wt%, g/g) of precipitated asphaltene in light oils. Experimental data are obtained based on high-resolution images taken from high-pressure cell processed by the image analysis method. Employing experi...

The traditional methods of designing antennas are not suitable in case of fractal antennas due to non availability of accurate mathematical design expressions. Recently, ANN model relating the physical and electromagnetic parameters of the fractal antenna to be designed is used as objective function of the optimization algorithm and it has been shown as an effective approach. In presented paper, ANN ensemble model has been used as the objective function of a PSO algorithm to calculate the optima...

Abstract The concentrations of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in sediments from the southern Caspian Sea in fall 2015 and winter 2016. The sum of 16 PAH (ΣPAH) concentrations varied from 17.3 ± 3.05 to 926.7 ± 157.37 ng g − 1 dry weight and 14.3 ± 0.58 to 85.8 ± 4.41 ng g − 1 dry weight in fall and winter, respectively. There was no significant correlation between PAH and total organic carbon contents ( p > 0.05). PAH source identification showed that the PAHs in the ...

Asphaltene can precipitate in oil reservoirs as a result of natural depletion and/or gas injection crippling the oil production performance. Most of the conventional models for asphaltene precipitation cannot precisely capture the asphaltene precipitation at a wide pressure range and for different oil types. To have a precise model that can be used for various oil types at a wide range of pressure conditions, a comprehensive artificial neural network (ANN) model was proposed to estimate the weig...

Abstract The concentration and distribution of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface water, sediment, and fish ( Clarias gariepinus) samples collected from Ovia River, Southern Nigeria were evaluated, to assess the contamination profile of the river. The concentrations of PAHs were measured to reflect the spatial and monthly distribution of PAHs in the matrices. Mean concentrations of total PAHs (∑PAHs) in surface water samples ranged from 2.33 to 25.83 μg/L sediment, 5.25 to 573.33...

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread in marine ecosystems and originate from natural sources and anthropogenic activities. PAHs enter the marine environment in two main ways, corresponding to chronic pollution or acute pollution by oil spills. The global PAH fluxes in marine environments are controlled by the microbial degradation and the biological pump, which plays a role in particle settling and in sequestration through bioaccumulation. Due to their low water solubility and ...

Vitrinite reflectance (VR) is considered the most used maturity indicator of source rocks. Although vitrinite reflectance is an acceptable parameter for maturity and is widely used, it is sometimes difficult to measure. Furthermore, Rock-Eval pyrolysis is a current technique for geochemical investigations and evaluating source rock by their quality and quantity of organic matter, which provide low cost, quick, and valid information. Predicting vitrinite reflectance by using a quick and straightf...

Abstract The solvent diffusivity is considered as a key factor in the design of solvent assisted processes in the bitumen field. In this study, a novel Adaptive neuro-fuzzy interference system (ANFIS) is employed to evaluate the diffusivity of the light hydrocarbons in the bitumen system. The particle swarm optimization (PSO) and genetic algorithm (GA) are adopted to promote ANFIS efficiency. The proposed models are established by a prepared dataset from multiple papers in the literature. Temper...
