• RGO/Co@Fe@Cu hollow nanosphere was obtained by a facile and controllable method. • The maximum RL was −49.71 dB with loading of only 5% at the thickness of 2.1 mm. • The frequency for RL less than −10 dB was 12–18 GHz with a bandwidth of 6.00 GHz. • The preparation mechanism of hollow three-layer structure was proposed.
