Abstract Photo-crosslinked nanofiber mats containing chitosan were obtained through the versatile and promising technology of electrospinning. Due to the challenging processability of chitosan by electrospinning because of its stiffness and polycationic nature, it was blended with easily-spinnable poly(ethylene oxide). The optimum conditions for electrospinning of chitosan/poly(eyhylene oxide) (CS/PEO) blends were selected for further characterization and investigation: the composition of CS/PEO 70/30 mass fraction was chosen as it allowed to produce uniform and defect free electrospun mats formed by fibers with an average diameter of 270 nm. In order to improve the physico-chemical properties (in particular the stability and water resistance) of the electrospun mats, electrospinning was coupled with the fast and eco-friendly technique of photo-crosslinking. The photo-curing reaction of the CS/PEO fibers, as well as the morphology, thermal properties and water resistance of the electrospun mats before and after application of UV irradiation, were investigated. The photo-crosslinking process was optimized in order to fabricate CS/PEO electrospun mats which are resistant to water and thus can enlarge the application of such membranes, especially in biomedical, filtration and food industries.

Abstract The influence of UV radiation, used as a sterilizing agent, on chitosan/poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) blends has been studied with ATR‐FTIR spectroscopy, contact angle measurements, atomic force microscopy (AFM), polarized microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results showed that photooxidation process took place on the sample surfaces. The efficiency of this process increased with rising chitosan content in the blends and this process was most efficient for chitosan...

In this study, the effect of crosslinking conditions was investigated to obtain insoluble poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) nanofiber mats having an ultraviolet (UV) initiating and crosslinking agent, pentaerythritol triacrylate (PETA), with various ratios in the presence or absence of UV irradiation at 366 nm. At first, PEO nanofibers were electrospun from 400,000 and 600,000 g/mole molecular weights of PEO and they were compared in terms of diameter and fiber morphology. Whereas applied voltage in th...

The development of a water-based polymer system that could be photocrosslinked during the drilling of fragile formations could be of a great interest. In this context, aqueous solutions of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) were photocrosslinked by ultraviolet radiation in the presence of benzophenone (BP). The photochemical crosslinking reaction showed a rate constant of 1 × 1012 L mol−1 s−1, indicating the formation of a complex between the reactants. The crosslinked PEO was fully characterized showin...

Abstract FTIR spectroscopy was used to study poly(ethylene oxide), PEO, irradiated in solid and molten aggregate states and as aqueous solutions of various concentrations. The changes in shape and width of –C–O–C– complex absorption intensities at around 1112 cm −1 were the most prominent. On irradiation of solid samples in contact with air shrinking of –C–O–C– complex and increase in its absorption intensities indicated predominant degradation. Crosslinking prevailed on irradiation of molten PE...

The irradiation of photo-initiated resin was studied under different conditions of temperature, UV lamp intensity, and reaction atmosphere (nitrogen and air). The results obtained by photo-DSC allowed us to determine kinetic data of the photo-polymerized reactions: the global activation energy and reaction enthalpy, and the conversion as...

Electrospun polymer membranes were considered to be promising materials for fine particulate matter (PM) filtration. However, the poor mechanical properties of the electrospun membrane restricted their application for pressure-driven air filtration. Herein, strength-enhanced electrospun polyimide (PI) membranes were demonstrated via a synergistic approach. Solvent-vapor treatment was utilized to introduce extra bonding at the cross points of PI nanofiber, while SiO2 nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs) were...
