Abstract Multimode Fiber (MMF) is an established choice for the high-speed backbones in Local Area Networks (LANs). Mode Division Multiplexing (MDM) is an emerging technology utilizing modes as independent data communication channels. MDM controls the delay spread of propagating modes in order to alleviate modal dispersion, which is the principal source of bandwidth limitation in MMF. This paper critically reviews and systematically classifies recent selective mode excitation techniques for mode division multiplexing. The analysis shows that MDM is a viable solution to increase a channel capacity through the combination and separation of the modes at the multiplexer and de-multiplexer.

Mode division multiplexing (MDM) is a promising technology for increasing the aggregate bandwidth of multimode fiber (MMF) in conjunction with wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) in face of the impending capacity crunch in optical fiber networks. This paper investigates the effect of radial and azimuthal mode spacings in a 25-channel MDM-WDM system in MMF using a spatial light modulator-controlled VCSEL array for excitation of Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) modes. A data rate of 25Gbps is achieved at...

Wavelength-division multiplexed-passive optical network (WDM-PON) is a revolutionary high-capacity and scalable broadband access network. This paper capitalizes on Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) modes to reduce modal dispersion and increase data capacity.A data rate of 25 Gbit/s is attained for a multimode fiber link by multiplexing five LG modes on five wavelengths centered at 1,550.12 nm for a distance up to 800 m.

Here we employ both dynamic and geometric phase control of light to produce radially modulated vector-vortex modes, the natural modes of optical fibers. We then measure these modes using a vector modal decomposition set-up as well as a tomography measurement, the latter providing a degree of the non-separability of the vector states, akin to an entanglement measure for quantum states. We demonstrate the versatility of the approach by creating the natural modes of a step-index fiber, which are kn...

Harnessing the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light is an appealing approach to developing photonic technologies for future applications in optical communications and high-dimensional quantum key distribution (QKD) systems. An outstanding challenge to the widespread uptake of the OAM resource is its efficient generation. In this work we design a new device that can directly emit an OAM-carrying light beam from a low-cost semiconductor laser. By fabricating micro-scale spiral phase plates with...

We fabricate mode converters by directly writing long-period gratings in a two-mode fiber with a CO2 laser. These mode converters allow the fundamental LP01 mode to be converted to any of the four higher order cylindrical vector modes or the LP11 modes. The transmission characteristics of these devices are insensitive to temperature variations and the mode conversion efficiency is insensitive to the polarization state of the input light. One of our typical gratings, which contains 15 grating per...

We experimentally demonstrate mode conversion by exploiting optical reflection of tilted few-mode fiber Bragg grating (FM-FBG). Mode conversions from LP01 mode to higher symmetric and asymmetric modes are achieved, and more than 99.5% conversion efficiency from LP01 to LP11 mode is obtained using a 1.6°-tilted FM-FBG. Influences of the weakly tilted FM-FBG parameters on the property of mode conversion is analyzed and discussed. A simultaneous mode conversion and demultiplexing scheme for 4-mode ...

Multiplexing of optical modes in waveguides is demonstrated using coupled vertical gratings. The device utilizes sinusoidally corrugated waveguides of different widths with a period designed to multiplex information at 1.55µm. The design, fabrication and characterization of devices is performed. Multiplexing of modes is demonstrated in optical structures which support 3 and 5 quasi-TE modes. The design utilizes counter-propagating modes in periodic structures, thus enabling the device to combine...

Abstract The endless growth of the Internet and its applications compels us to introduce new technologies and solutions for increasing data bandwidth demands. In this paper, we propose a technique for selective excitation of fifteen mode groups in a multimode fiber (MMF) using an elliptical few mode fiber (FMF). The elliptical FMF was designed using finite difference beam propagation method and inserted as a pre-compensator before a MMF channel in a numerical optical system to evaluate its modal...
The advent of interconnected devices, sensors, and systems requires increasingly large data transmission rates. Optical communications has met these bandwidth needs due to the large information-carrying capacity of light, although new modulation and multiplexing approaches are required to keep up with increasing demand. To this end, mode-division multiplexing (MDM), in which light propagates in on-chip waveguides with distinct and orthogonal spatial mode shapes, may offer a promising solution. T...
