Abstract
Abstract The microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg94Zn2.5Y2.5Mn1 (at%) with different Ti contents were investigated. The addition of 0.3 at% Ti yielded the best strength. However, Mg93.5Zn2.5Y2.5Mn1Ti0.5 exhibited the lowest yield asymmetry. These changes were attributed to the combined effects of grain refinement, increased LPSO phase, and reduced axial ration (c/a).

Abstract The nanoscale deformation behavior of high strength (240 MPa)-high ductility (21.4%) combination Mg-rare earth alloy with long-period stacking-ordered structure was studied via nanoindentation and electron microscopy, and the behavior compared with the low strength (65 MPa)-good ductility (15%) alloy without LPSO structure. In non-LPSO alloy, basal slip mainly occurred, while in LPSO-containing alloy, the LPSO changed the deformation mechanism to extensive non-basal slip and deformation...

Abstract The long period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase is a key strengthening precipitate phase in the Mg-Y-Zn based alloys. Fully controlled by the chemical ordering and stacking faults, the LPSO phase could be strongly modified by alloying elements. This work explored the effect of trace Sn addition on the Mg-6Y-2Zn alloy, with an emphasis on the LPSO phase and corresponding changes of mechanical properties in the as-cast, as-annealed and as-extruded states. Results show that the 18R LPSO phas...

Abstract The effect of Ti addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of cast Mg-Gd-Y-Zn alloys was investigated. Ti exhibited a refinement effect comparable to that of Zr in the as-cast condition. With the increase of Ti content, the phenomenon of grain refinement and homogenization was more obvious, especially for solution-treated alloys. The finest grains were obtained with 0.8 wt% Ti and were composed of α-Mg and refined Mg5(Gd, Y, Zn) in the as-cast structure. Zr and Ti could b...

In this study, Mg-8Sn-2Zn-2Al (TZA822) alloys with varying Mg2Sn contents prior to extrusion were obtained by different pre-treatments (without and with T4), and the strengthening response related to micro and nano-size Mg2Sn precipitates in the extruded TZA822 alloys was reported. The results showed that the morphology of nano-size Mg2Sn precipitates exhibits a significant change in basal plane from rod-like to spherical, owing to the decrement in the fraction of micro-size particles before ext...

Abstract The addition of boron to long-periodic stacking ordered (LPSO) phase-strengthened Mg–Zn–Y system alloys has been studied for the first time. The as-cast Mg94Zn2.5Y2.5Mn1 alloy containing 0.003 wt% B with abundant LPSO phase and refined grains exhibited optimal mechanical performance with ultimate tensile strength and elongation of 252.5 MPa and 11.0%, respectively.

Abstract The influence of Ca addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg 94 Zn 2.5 Y 2.5 Mn 1 alloy were investigated. Results showed that Ca induced the formation of long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) structure while discouraged that of Mg 3 Zn 3 Y 2 eutectic structure. With Ca addition, the microstructure were refined, and the mechanical properties were enhanced.

Abstract The microstructure evolution of Mg 96 Y 3 Ni 1 alloy with different Ti contents were investigated. Mg 95.8 Y 3 Ni 1 Ti 0.2 alloy achieved finest grains, which was composed of α-Mg and long period stacking ordered phase. The ultimate tensile strength of Mg 95.8 Y 3 Ni 1 Ti 0.2 alloy reached to 435 MPa with elongation of 21% after hot rolling and aging treatment.

Abstract Room temperature mechanical behavior of extruded Mg–Y–Zn alloys with varying fractions of LPSO phase was studied in tension and compression along the extrusion direction. The microstructure is characterised by elongated LPSO fibers along the extrusion direction within the magnesium matrix. Moreover, the magnesium matrix presents a bimodal grain structure with dynamically-recrystallized grains and deformed, elongated grains with the basal plane parallel to the extrusion direction. The be...

Abstract A Mg–Y–Zn alloy composed almost completely of the Long-Period-Stacking-Ordered (LPSO) phase has been prepared by casting and extrusion to flat bar. An elongated microstructure is obtained with different grain orientations along the extrusion, transverse and normal directions, leading to a strong orientation dependence of strength. Differences of tensile and compressive stress are also noted. The importance of basal slip and other dislocation-dependent deformation mechanisms is discussed...

Abstract The effects of Y on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg–6Zn–1Mn alloy were investigated. The results show that the addition of Y has significant effect on the phase composition, microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg–6Zn–1Mn alloy. Varied phases compositions, including Mg 7 Zn 3 , I -phase (Mg 3 YZn 6 ), W -phase (Mg 3 Y 2 Zn 3 ) and X -phase (Mg 12 YZn), are obtained by adjusting the Zn to Y mass ratio. Mn element exists as the fine Mn particles, which are well d...

Abstract null null A novel method was developed via the continuous refinement of grains to prepare an Mg–6.5Y–1.2Er–1.6Zn (wt.%) alloy with a ductility of 35% and an ultimate tensile strength of 377 MPa. It involved the use of a 32-pass equal-channel angular pressing process. The strength and ductility of the obtained magnesium alloy after the rapid processing were improved by 188.5% and 700%, respectively, compared with an as-cast alloy. These improvements are attributed to the refined 14H-LPSO...

Single-phase hexagonal close-packed structure of the ScYLaGdTbDyHoErLu high-entropy alloy was studied in detail. The applicability of the rule of mixture was analyzed with respect to the lattice constant, mechanical parameters, elastic properties, melting point, and hardness of the alloy. Significant tension-compression asymmetry has been found and explained by the strength differential effect during the uniaxial tests. Numerous deformation twins and high densities of stacking faults can be obse...

As-cast, as-extruded and T6 heat-treated Mg-2Zn-0.3Mn-[x] wt.% Y (x = 0, 0.4, 0.8) alloys were formed via a melting process, an extrusion process and T6 aging treatment, respectively. Microstructural analysis showed that the addition of yttrium (Y) resulted in grain refinement in the samples. The hot extrusion process and T6 heat treatment contributed to the precipitation of second phases and a reduction of the dislocation density as well as to a reduction of the lattice distortion. The thermal ...
