The Ser/Thr protein kinase MTOR (mechanistic target of rapamycin kinase) regulates cellular metabolism and controls macroautophagy/autophagy. Autophagy has both metabolic and quality control functions, including recycling nutrients at times of starvation and removing dysfunctional intracellular organelles.
