Abstract
This review describes a systematic approach to the interpretation of colonic biopsy specimens of patients with acute colitis. Five main histologic patterns are discussed: acute colitis, focal active colitis, pseudomembranous colitis, hemorrhagic colitis, and ischemic colitis.
