Abstract
The blended ash fusibility characteristics and its variation mechanism of biomass (peanut hull (PH), bean straw (BS), and corn cob (CC)) and Changzhi coal (CZ) with high silica–alumina were investigated using an ash fusion temperature (AFT) detector, thermogravimetric differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and FactSage software. The results showed that the AFT of CZ mixed ash decreased with the addition of PH ash, and the AFT of CZ mixed ash decreased rapidly (0–30%) and then changed slowly (30–50%) with an increasing BS ash mass ratio; however, the AFT of CZ mixed ash decreased first (0–20%) and then increased (20–50%) with an increasing CC ash mass ratio. The different AFT variations mainly depend on the ash chemical compositions and their existing form. Biomass ash with high contents of fluxing oxides promotes the transformations of high melting point (MP) mullite and quartz into low-MP minerals and their eutectics, resulting in a decrease in the AFT. At high temperature, ...

The influences of two red mud (RM) samples (ZZ and ZM) on fusion behaviors of three high ash fusion temperature (AFT) coals (FZ, JC and JZ) were investigated. It was evaluated by determining AFTs of coals, RMs, and the mixtures of coal ash with RM, as well as their compositions of ashes and mineral. The results showed that the contents of CaO, Fe2O3, and Na2O in RMs were higher than those in coal ashes, which caused RMs’ AFTs lower than those of coals. The formation of high melting-point mullite...

This study investigated effects of blending ratio and alkali and alkaline earth metallic (AAEM) species in the feedstock on char reactivity and producer gas composition in steam co-gasification of chars of blended coal and biomass. Experiments were conducted on a bench-scale fixed bed gasifier in which lignite was used as coal and radiata pine was used as biomass. The blending ratios of lignite to pine (L/P) were, respectively, 0:100 (pure pine), 20:80, 50:50, 80:20 and 100:0 (pure lignite). Lig...

Following the global trend of industrial growth, Bangladesh aims towards significant industrial expansion, which is associated with increased energy consumption. Current energy generation in Bangladesh is highly dependent on fossil fuels. However, increasing energy demands, stringent regulations on fossil fuel-based emissions, and concerns related to national energy-security make it imperative to search for alternative energy sources. Biomass-based renewable sources, such as wood, agricultural r...

Biomass gasification is a widely used thermochemical process for obtaining products with more value and potential applications than the raw material itself. Cutting-edge, innovative and economical gasification techniques with high efficiencies are a prerequisite for the development of this technology. This paper delivers an assessment on the fundamentals such as feedstock types, the impact of different operating parameters, tar formation and cracking, and modelling approaches for biomass gasific...

Abstract The present study investigates the enhancement of CO 2 gasification reactivity of coals due to the presence of catalytic elements in biomass such as K 2 O, CaO, Na 2 O and MgO. Co-gasification of three Indian coal chars with two biomass chars has been studied using isothermal thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) in CO 2 environment at 900, 1000 and 1100 °C. The conversion profiles have been used to establish synergetic or inhibitory effect on coal char reactivity by the presence of catalyti...

High aluminum coal (HAC, Al2O3 in its ash content ranges 38–51%) is abundant and plays an important role in energy and chemical product in China. The ash fusion characteristics of HAC and its modification behaviors by coal blending or flux were investigated by ash fusion temperature (AFT) analyzer, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, X-ray diffractometry combined with normalized reference intensity ratio method, and scanning electron microscopy. The AFT variation is manly dependent on mineral compo...

Molecular dynamics simulations are adopted to investigate the effect of the ratio of silicon and aluminum (S/A) contents on ash fusion properties and to predict the theoretical melting points and viscosities. The melting points are identified by the variation of the volume and mean square displacement, while viscosities are calculated by the Green–Kubo formula. The melting point is determined to be higher for coal ash systems with higher S/A ratios. The analyses of the radial distribution functi...

Abstract Combustion of sewage sludge (SS) is a promising alternative waste-to-energy process. However the mono-combustion of SS may induce severe ash slagging behavior, which will shorten the life of the combustion reactor. In this study, rice husk (RH) as a clean and high-energy density auxiliary was introduced to improve the slagging characteristics of SS and the underlying mechanism was revealed. The results indicated that RH addition can raise ash fusion temperature (AFT) of SS during co-com...
