A novel nitrogen-doped reduced graphene sponge composite (NRGS) is fabricated by using melamine sponge to restrain the aggregation of graphene sheets during reduction. The anion-exchange polymer layered graphene composites (A-NRGS) are prepared by coating the surface of the NRGS electrode with cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol) with quaternization modification (C-qPVA). With the help of a melamine sponge to suppress the agglomerate of graphene sheets, the NRGS exhibits a unique three-dimensional (3D) interconnected porous structure with abundant nitrogen doping of 5.2%. Its specific surface area is up to 241 m2/g. In addition, the enhanced wettability of A-NRGS composites favors the diffusion of ion from the electrolyte to electrode. Therefore, A-NRGS composites have excellent electrochemical capacity (184 F/g). The membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) performance for A-NRGS electrode (11.3 mg/g) is higher than that of pristine reduced graphene oxide (RGO) (6.2 mg/g) and NRGS (8.6 mg/g) electrodes. Abstract This study presents the viability and preference of capacitive deionization (CDI) for removing different heavy metal ions in various conditions. The removal performance and mechanisms of three ions, cadmium (Cd 2+ ), lead (Pb 2+ ) and chromium (Cr 3+ ) were investigated individually and as a mixture under different applied voltages and ion concentrations. It was found that CDI could effectively remove these metals, and the performance was positively correlated with the applied voltage. ...

Highly porous activated carbons were resource-recovered from Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit. wood through combined chemical and physical activation (i.e., KOH etching followed by CO2 activation). This invasive species, which has severely damaged the ecological economics of Taiwan, was used as the precursor for producing high-quality carbonaceous electrodes for capacitive deionization (CDI). Carbonization and activation conditions strongly influenced the structure of chars and activated carb...

Highly efficient capacitive deionization (CDI) relies on unimpeded transport of salt ions to the electrode surface. Graphene is an ideal candidate to provide superb conditions for ion adsorption as it possesses high theoretical surface area and electrical conductivity. When ions are stored solely within the electric double layers (EDLs), a hydrophilic graphene surface with hierarchical pores can maximize the accessible surface area and promote the ion transport. In the case of synergistic ion st...

Carbon-based electrodes have experienced great progress for capacitive desalination owning to their high conductivity and low cost. However, the fundamental issue of the origin of their capacitive activity is far from clarified. In particular, a systematic exploration of the influences of intrinsic defects ubiquitous in carbon on capacitive desalination is still a great challenge. Herein, porous carbons with different degrees of intrinsic defects were first designed via an effective dual-templat...

Abstract Environment-friendly production of power and clean water is one of the major goals of 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and can be achieved by emerging electromembrane processes, such as reverse electrodialysis (RED) and membrane capacitive deionisation (MCDI). RED generates electricity from salinity gradient energy sources, while MCDI desalinates (mainly) brackish water. However, fouling, scaling, stack channels clogging and undesired uphill ionic transport can reduce the power ...
