Lower esophageal (Schatzki`s) rings are found in 6-14% of routine barium radiographs. Even though most Schatzki rings are asymptomatic, they are considered to be the most common cause of episodic dysphagia for solids and food impaction in adults. The vast majority of symptomatic Schatzki ring are amendable to dilation. Esophageal dilation can be achieved by bouginage or balloon dilation. The successful diatation of Schatzki`s ring with balloon dilation is rare case in Korea. This 66-year old male patient experienced progressive dysphagia for 5months. He began trouble swallowing liquid foods and lost body weight during the period. Endoscopy revealed the ring just above the esophagogastric mucosal junction. The diameter of the esophageal lumen was about 4 mm. Then pneumatic balloon dilatation was performed by CRE fixed wire balloon dilator under fluoroscopic control. The ring was widened and symptom of dysphagia relieved after pneumatic dilatation the diameter of the esophageal lumen increased to 10mm. We report a case of Schatzki ring that was treated with pneumatic dilation.
