Abstract
The separation of high purity ethene from the mixed gaseous products of cracking poses significant obstacles. Here, the authors present a metal-organic framework which, in contrast to most absorbents, selectively binds the less polar ethane thus allowing the efficient collection of the target product.

We demonstrate here that porous coordination frameworks, functionalized with monodentate hydroxide on the pore surface, can achieve ultrahigh CO2 adsorption affinity (124 kJ mol−1), adsorption capacity (9.1 mmol cm−3 at 298 K and 1 bar), and CO2/N2 selectivity (262 at 298 K) by the reversible formation/decomposition of bicarbonate in the adsorption/desorption processes. More importantly, these materials can capture up to 4.1 mmol cm−3 or 13.4 wt% of CO2 from simulated flue gases (CO2 pressure 0....

Gas sorption and separation in porous materials is dependent on the host–guest binding within any given system. Now, the molecular details of cooperative binding between small hydrocarbons and a metal–organic framework, NOTT-300, at multiple sites have been elucidated by complementary scattering and diffraction techniques. This material is also capable of separating C1 and C2 hydrocarbons under ambient conditions.

The introduction of the combination of open metal site (OMS) and π-complexation into MOF has led to very high ethylene–ethane adsorption selectivity at 318 K, as illustrated in the context of MIL-101–Cr–SO3Ag. The interactions with ethylene from both OMS and π-complexation in MIL-101–Cr–SO3Ag have been investigated by in situ IR spectroscopic studies and computational calculations, which suggest that π-complexation contributes dominantly to the high ethylene–ethane adsorption selectivity.

The separation of ethylene from ethane is one of the most energy-intensive single distillations practiced. This separation could be alternatively made by an adsorption process if the adsorbent would preferentially adsorb ethane over ethylene. Materials that exhibit this feature are scarce. Here, we report the case of a metal–organic framework, the IRMOF-8, for which the adsorption isotherms of ethane and ethylene were measured at 298 and 318 K up to pressures of 1000 kPa. Separation of ethane/et...

In this work, we demonstrate for the first time the introduction of π-complexation into a porous aromatic framework (PAF), affording significant increase in ethylene uptake capacity, as illustrated in the context of Ag(I) ion functionalized PAF-1, PAF-1-SO3Ag. IAST calculations using single-component-isotherm data and an equimolar ethylene/ethane ratio at 296 K reveal that PAF-1-SO3Ag shows exceptionally high ethylene/ethane adsorption selectivity (Sads: 27 to 125), far surpassing benchmark zeol...

Postsynthetic metal and ligand exchange is a versatile approach towards functionalized MFU-4l frameworks. Upon thermal treatment of MFU-4l formates, coordinatively strongly unsaturated metal centers, such as zinc(II) hydride or copper(I) species, are generated selectively. CuI-MFU-4l prepared in this way was stable under ambient conditions and showed fully reversible chemisorption of small molecules, such as O2, N2, and H2, with corresponding isosteric heats of adsorption of 53, 42, and 32 kJ mo...

New materials capable of separating mixtures of saturated, unsaturated, and aromatic hydrocarbons can enable more efficient industrial processes and cleaner energy. Outstanding challenges in hydrocarbon separations stem from the similar structures, properties, and reactivities of the molecules comprising many of these mixtures. With high surface areas, tunable pore geometries, and adjustable surface functionality, metal–organic frameworks hold tremendous promise for effecting previously difficul...

Two types of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been synthesized and evaluated in the separation of C2 and C3 olefins and paraffins. Whereas Co2(dhtp) (=Co–CPO-27 = Co–MOF-74) and Mg2(dhtp) show an adsorption selectivity for the olefins ethene and propene over the paraffins ethane and propane, the zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-8 behaves in the opposite way and preferentially adsorbs the alkane. Consequently, in breakthrough experiments, the olefins or paraffins, respectively, can be separ...

Abstract null null Hydrocarbons are exclusively composed of carbon and hydrogen and serve as crucial raw materials for several chemical processes. Light hydrocarbons are produced via catalytic cracking and the dehydrogenation of long-chain hydrocarbons and require effective separation due to undesirable components or impurities. Adsorptive separation is considered a promising technique because of its lower energy consumption than conventional processes (e.g., cryogenic distillation), and advance...

Abstract null null The rational integration of chemotherapy and hydroxyl radical (·OH)-mediated chemodynamic therapy (CDT) via functional metal-organic frameworks (MOF) carriers has great potential in cancer therapy. In this work, aminotriazole (3-AT) doped polyhedral metal organic frameworks (denoted as MAF) were prepared by template ligand replacement, where CDT was initiated by Cu2+/Cu+ modulated Fenton reaction and enhanced by effectively regulating the catalase activity with 3-AT. However, ...

Abstract null null The light hydrocarbons adsorption and separation from mixed gas is very important to the petroleum industry. Herein, a simple and effective strategy for preparing hierarchical porous carbons (HPCs) derived from biomass and urea with tunable pore size distribution is proposed. With the increase of urea content, the pore size distributions of HPCs become narrow, and the surface area (from 3588 to 2626 m2 g–1) and total pore volume (2.605 to 1.688 mL g–1) decrease. Tested at an a...

Abstract null null The selective adsorption of ethane (C2H6) in the separation process of C2H6 and ethylene (C2H4) is of great importance for obtaining polymer-grade C2H4 in industry, yet it is still challenging task to develop suitable adsorbents with large adsorption capacity, high selectivity and excellent stability for efficient separation of C2H6/C2H4. Herein, carbazole-based covalent trazine frameworks (CTFs) prepared by ionothermal strategy are proposed for C2H6/C2H4 for the first time. B...

Abstract null null For separation of ethylene (C2H4) and ethane (C2H6), pressure swing adsorption (PSA) with C2H6-selective porous materials is considered as an ideal alternative to traditional energy-intensity cryogenic distillation. Inspired by the geometry complement feature between molecular lock and target in molecular imprinting recognition system, herein, we select the microporous metal–organic framework Fe2(BDP)3 with triangular channels as study object and investigate its adsorption sep...

Abstract null null The slight differences between ternary components of C2 hydrocarbons make the separation of C2H2/C2H6/C2H4 mixtures one of the most challenging tasks in the petrochemical industry. In this study, a family of saturated coordination titanium-based metal-organic frameworks with high stability is constructed for one-step C2H4 purification. Single component adsorption measurements along with dynamic breakthrough experiments illustrated that these MOFs clearly exhibited large adsorp...

Abstract null null The separation of ethane (C2H6) from ethylene (C2H4) is one of the most challenging and important tasks in chemical industry. Herein we report two interpenetrated diamondoid (dia) coordination networks, Dia-4-M [M(pba)2] (pba = 4-(4-pyridyl)benzoate); M = Ni or Co), that can directly capture ethane from ethane-ethylene mixtures with reverse C2H6/C2H4 separation. Both materials not only exhibit ultra-high C2H6 uptake (100 cm3 g−1 for Dia-4-Ni; 103 cm3 g−1 for Dia-4-Co) but also...

Abstract null null Separating ethane (C2H6) from ethylene (C2H4) using ethane-selective adsorbents to replace energy-intensive cryogenic distillation technology is an important energy-saving method in the petrochemical industry to obtain high purity C2H4. Limited to the low separation efficiency in current commercial materials, it is very urgent and promising to fabricate such alkane selective adsorbents using cheap ligands and simple synthesis methods, which have characteristics such as stable ...

One-step adsorptive purification of ethylene (C2H4) from four-component gas mixtures comprising acetylene (C2H2), ethylene (C2H4), ethane (C2H6) and carbon dioxide (CO2) is an unmet challenge in the area of commodity purification. Herein, we report that the ultramicroporous sorbent Zn-atz-oba (H2oba = 4,4-dicarboxyl diphenyl ether; Hatz = 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole) enables selective adsorption of C2H2, C2H6 and CO2 over C2H4 thanks to the binding sites that lie in its undulating pores. The preferential capture of ethane (C2H6) over ethylene (C2H4) presents a very cost-effective and energy-saving means applied to adsorptive separation and purification of C2H4 with a high product purity, which is however challenged by low selectivity originating from their similar molecular sizes and physical properties. Substituent engineering has been widely employed for selectivity regulation and improvement, but its effect on C2H6/C2H4 separation has been rarely explored to date. In this wor...
