Abstract
Abstract Concrete cylinders with an embedded reinforcing bar and different water cement ratios were cured for different periods and then exposed in a salt spray chamber (according to ISO-9227). Cylinders from the same batches were also exposed to a marine atmosphere for 24 months at a location 50 m from the shoreline. In both exposures the corrosion rate, the corrosion potential and the chloride content close to the reinforcing bars were monitored as a function of the exposure time, in order to obtain information about the corrosion kinetics. These data allowed us to find relationships between exposure time in marine natural weathering (field tests) and in a salt spray chamber (accelerated tests). Therefore, rapid surveys (in periods of 30–45 days) of the type of reinforced concrete evaluated here can be made using 7 days of curing. The results showed that the salt spray chamber tests modified the corrosion kinetics of reinforced concretes with curing times below 7 days.

We show that the atmospheric temperature-humidity complex (T-HC) of sites located in a tropical humid climate cannot be well characterized by annual average values. Better information is given by the systematic study of daily changes of temperature (T) and relative humidity (RH), which can be modeled with linear and parabolic functions. According to ISO 9223, we determine the time of wetness (TOW) for metallic surfaces in these environments using the T-HC. We recommend the analysis of the differ...

The infrastructure of the Mexican southeastern coastal zone is affected by corrosion problems which are due, mainly, to the construction bad practices and to the aggressive environmental agents (temp., Relative Humidity, chlorides). The first actions for knowing and controlling them have been taken on the coast of Progreso, Yucatan. Cylinders of solid concrete and others with an embedded rebar were constructed and exposed to the marine environment studying different variables like w/c ratio, tim...

Local attack of reinforcement is observed usually in chloride-contaminated concrete. When mechanical weakening of the concrete structure is affected by the bar section loss in the places where corrosion is intensified, the maximum penetration of the deepest pits happens to be a very relevant datum. In this work average corrosion values are compared with maximum pit depth values. Using natural corrosion tests and accelerated tests, it has been found that the maximum penetration of localized attac...

Abstract Development of a deterioration model for cementitious materials is important in assessing long-term integrity of nuclear waste repositories. The authors preliminarily examined a new test method for acceleration of aging of mortar specimens by application of electrical potential gradients and observed whether the method could throw light on the deterioration process of cementitious materials under repository conditions. As a result, it was concluded that the application of a potential gr...

The effect of water-cement ratio (w/c) and curing regime on chloride ion ingress of 20 x 20 x 12 cm concrete specimens exposed to Mediterranean Sea climate was studied. Variants included w/c of 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, and 0.75, and 1, 3, and 7 days of water curing at 30 C (86 F). Diffusion curves have been obtained from dry-drilled pulverized samples extracted in 5 mm (0.198 in.) steps after 1/2, 1, 1 1/2, 2, and 3 years of exposure. A depth of 0.4 and a 1.0 percent Cl-threshold for the different variant...

This is a report on a method for determining low-levels of chloride in concrete and raw materials. Research testing indicates that this method will accurately measure the low chloride levels. This method is used to establish specifications limiting the amount of chloride in concrete production. The method is also used to investigate the chloride content in existing concrete structures. /FHWA/

Abstract Based on the similarity principle, the similarity criterion of concrete attacked by sulfate corrosion was deduced, and the change laws of concrete sulfate attack under natural condition and artificial simulated environment were revealed. The variations of micro structure, morphology and compositions of concrete before and after sulfate attack were investigated by Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM), Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP), Fourier Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR),...

Corrosion of the reinforced concrete (RC) structures has been affecting the major infrastructures in U.S. and in other continents, causing the recent several bridge collapses and incidents. While the theoretical understanding is well-established, the reliable prediction of the corrosion process in the RC structural systems has hardly been successful due to the inherent uncertainties existed in the electrochemical corrosion process and the associated material and environmental conditions. The pap...

Several methods to quantify the complexity of a time series have been proposed in the literature, which can be classified into three categories: structure/self-affinity, attractor in the phase space, and randomness. In 2009, Lacasa et al. proposed a new method for characterizing a time series called the natural visibility algorithm, which maps the data into a network. To further investigate the capabilities of this technique, in this work, we analyzed the monthly ambient temperature of 4 cities ...

The effects of water-cement ratio, admixture and exposure time on chloride concentration and time-varying apparent and instantaneous chloride diffusion coefficient were investigated. Furthermore, the similarity between the time-varying chloride diffusion coefficient of concrete under simulated and natu...

Abstract The Arabian Gulf is one of the most unfriendly environments for concrete structures due to the harsh chloride attack to reinforcing steel. Durability of concrete is improved by the addition of Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) and/or chemical agents to concrete mixtures. A marine exposure site was constructed on the west coast of the Gulf in order to study the influence of SCMs and chemical admixtures on corrosion activities in reinforced concrete. Plain and reinforced concret...

Abstract Carbon FRP can be used as anode in impressed current cathodic protection of rebar in concrete. Although, ICCP reduces mass loss in rebar due to corrosion, it reduces bond, too. Most appropriate protection current density is investigated that induces lowest mass loss with highest bond stress. ICCP was applied with different protection current densities to rebar in concrete, pre-corroded to three corrosion levels. CFRP was bonded to concrete surface using conductive adhesive. Protected sp...
