Pulmonary fibrosis is a late toxicity of thoracic irradiation with few effective therapies. Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSC) have recently been demonstrated to suppress radiation-induced skin fibrosis by inhibiting inflammatory macrophages. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that BMSC can suppress radiation-induced fibrosis by altering the inflammatory milieu of irradiated lung tissue.
