Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the performance of hollow reinforced concrete (RC) bridge columns with triangular reinforcement details for materials quantity reduction and to provide data for developing improved design criteria. Hollow column sections are designed based on the economic considerations of the cost savings associated with reduced materials and design moments compared with increased construction complexity and hence increased labour costs. The proposed triangular reinforcement details are economically feasible and rational and facilitate shorter construction periods. Five hollow RC bridge columns were tested under a constant axial load and a cyclically reversed horizontal load. The effect of the proposed reinforcement details on the performance of hollow bridge columns was investigated. The computer program RCAHEST (Reinforced concrete analysis in higher evaluation system technology) was used to analyse RC structures. The proposed numerical method for the performance assessment of hollow...

An internally confined hollow reinforced concrete (ICH RC) column offers strong and durable confinement by the reinforcement of the inner tube. When the concrete in an ICH RC column experiences axial pressure, an inward radial pressure is produced by the arching action. This radial pressure is resisted by the concrete and the inner tube. Previous research considered the outer pressure and inner pressure to be equal. However, the inner pressure acting on the inner tube is lower because it is part...

The purpose of this study was to investigate the inelastic behaviour and ductility capacity of circular hollow reinforced concrete bridge piers based on various design parameters. The ultimate strength and ductility of these bridge piers varied with the amount and arrangement of lateral reinforcement, the ratio of the inside to outside diameter of the column sections, the axial load ratio and longitudinal steel percentage. A total of eight solid and hollow circular reinforced concrete bridge pie...

The primary objective of this study was to identify concrete contribution to the initial shear strength of reinforced concrete (RC) hollow columns under lateral loading. Seven large-scale RC rectangular hollow column specimens were tested under monotonic or cyclic lateral loads. The most important design parameter was column length-to-depth aspect ratio ranging between 1.5 and 3.0, and the other test variables included web area ratio, hollow section ratio, and loading history. The tests showed t...

A consistent methodology is suggested for modelling confinement in both solid and hollow reinforced concrete bridge pier sections, within the computational framework of three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis. The ultimate goal is to suggest the most convenient transverse reinforcement arrangements in terms of enhanced strength and ductility, as well as ease of construction and cost-effectiveness. The present study is particularly relevant with respect to confinement of hollow sectio...

The purpose of this study is to investigate the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge columns that have lap splices in the plastic hinge region when subjected to impulsive near-fault ground motions. For this purpose, the paper presents the results of shaking table tests on four reinforced concrete bridge columns. By using a sophisticated non-linear finite-element analysis program, the accuracy and objectivity of the assessment process can be enhanced. A computer program, the RCAHEST ...

A procedure is presented for assessment of the performance of reinforced concrete bridge columns. Fourteen circular reinforced concrete bridge columns were tested under a constant axial load and a cyclically reversed horizontal load. A computer program, named RCAHEST (reinforced concrete analysis in higher evaluation system technology), was used to analyze these reinforced concrete structures. A damage index based on the predicted hysteretic behavior of a reinforced concrete bridge column was us...

This paper presents a nonlinear finite element analysis procedure for the seismic damage assessment of reinforced concrete bridge columns. A computer program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. A damage index based on the predicted hysteretic behavior of a reinforced concrete bridge column is defined. Damage indices aim to provide a means of quantifying numerically the damage in reinfor...

Analytical models for the inelastic behavior and ductility capacity of reinforced concrete bridge piers under earthquake are presented. The models for material nonlinearity include tensile, compressive, and shear models for cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel where the smeared crack approach is incorporated. An interface element is used to account for local discontinuous deformations at the boundary plane caused by abrupt changes in stiffness where members with different thicknesse...

28 compression tests were conducted on concrete panels to determine the complete stress-strain relationship of the confined concrete in hollow bridge columns. Nine analytical models were used to analyze the test specimens. Test results were compared with analytical results. Based on the comparison, the Muguruma et al. model was modified to accurately predict the stress-strain relationship of the confined concrete. The seismic performance of hollow bridge columns was further studied by reversed c...

Abstract Hollow concrete columns (HCCs) reinforced with steel bars have been employed extensively for bridge piers, ground piles, and utility poles because they use fewer materials and offer higher structural efficiency compared to solid concrete columns with the same concrete area. Many experimental studies have been conducted to investigate the behavior of HCCs under different loading conditions and found that the structural performance of HCCs is critically affected by many design parameters....
