Abstract Corrosion potential mapping is a useful qualitative technique for measuring the risk of corrosion for reinforcements. However, occasionally this requires not only knowing whether or not th...

A reliability-based method was developed for predicting the initiation time and the probability of flexural failure for continuous slab bridges with load-induced cracks exposed to chloride environment resulting from de-icing salts. A practical methodology was used for predicting the diffusion coefficient of chloride ingress into the pre-existing load-induced cracks in concrete. The reduction in the cross-sectional area of the reinforcement due to corrosion was included in the model. The proposed...

Steel in concrete is a very complex system where ionics and electrodics meet. From the perspective of ionics, the transport rate of oxidants (O2) and aggressive species (CO2, Cl−) through the porous concrete cover defines the service life of structures. The study of these transport phenomena is a very complex task due to the changing nature of the pore network from the reaction of the matrix (pore walls) with the incoming species. At the steel–concrete interface, irreversible corrosion process o...

Abstract This study aims to quantitatively estimate the geometric effect of steel bar on the resistivity measurement above reinforcement as a method of evaluating concrete resistivity. For this purpose, the geometric effect is evaluated by the resistivity estimation model (REM) that estimates the apparent resistivity above the reinforcement. This REM as a mathematical model reflects the resistivity of concrete and reinforcement, as well as the cover depth, the bar diameter, and electrode interva...

The accuracy in the measurement of the rate of corrosion of steel in concrete depends on many factors. The high resistivity of concrete makes the polarization data erroneous due to the Ohmic drop. The other source of error is the use of an arbitrarily assumed value of the Stern-Geary constant for calculating corrosion current density. This paper presents the outcomes of a research work conducted to develop a reliable and low-cost experimental setup and a simple calculation procedure that can be ...

Corrosion inhibitor have a significant influence on corrosion rate of marine concrete. In this paper, linear polarization method is used in reinforced concrete that under marine environment, and reinforced concrete is mixed with corrosion inhibitor. The results show that: corrosion inhibitor has a little influence on the basic mechanical properties of reinforced concrete, and it can effectively improve the corrosion resistance ability of reinforced concrete. For reinforced concrete of the same c...

Inhomogeneous corrosion in reinforced concrete is investigated using a beam with a flexural crack intersecting the reinforcement. An Evans diagram representation of the macrocell corrosion system is developed. The relationship between the current density and the potentials relative to the crack obtained from the Tafel polarization responses of active and passive steel in concrete compares favorably with the experimental values. When both microcell and macrocell mechanisms contribute to metal los...

The corrosion rate of steel embedded in concrete is evaluated using polarization resistance assumed on the boundary between concrete and steel. However, the previously established polarization resistance method requires the removal of the concrete cover to connect the steel with a wire lead, and it takes a long time for the measurement of corrosion. This study proposes a new method for the nondestructive testing of deterioration caused by corrosion in concrete structures by estimating the surfac...
