Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a significant cause of visual loss in the United States and Western Europe. As the population ages, the prevalence rate of advanced AMD is expected to double by 2030. A one-hour session of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO2) was used to treated a group of 14 patients with advanced AMD. Eight patients were treated at 1.75 ATA, and six patients were treated at 1.5 ATA for one hour. Significant improvements in visual acuity and/or visual field, with improvemen...

Following the hypothesis that chronic ische- mia is the main cause of functional deficiency in glau- coma, a double blind clinical experiment was carried out to study the effect of hyperbaric oxygenation in 51 glau- coma subjects, of which 31 were in the experimental group and 20 in the control group. In the experimental group there was a significant improvement of visual fields (p 0.05).

Sir, C ystoid macular oedema occurs as a frequent complication in diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions, uveitis and postoperatively in cataract surgery. In general, macular oedema is most prevalent in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) Ischaemia and/or inflammation may pathologically explain the development of macular oedema associated with these disorders. No effective, specific treatment by laser, systemic or topical steroids, haemodilution or surgery is available. Hyperbaric oxyg...

Background Patients with acute carbon monoxide poisoning commonly have cognitive sequelae. We conducted a double-blind, randomized trial to evaluate the effect of hyperbaric-oxygen treatment on such cognitive sequelae. Methods We randomly assigned patients with symptomatic acute carbon monoxide poisoning in equal proportions to three chamber sessions within a 24-hour period, consisting of either three hyperbaric-oxygen treatments or one normobaric-oxygen treatment plus two sessions of exposure t...

Editor,—Cystoid macular oedema is a well known complication of chronic uveitis and is the major cause of visual disability accounting for 29% of blindness and 41% of visual impairment in this group.1 Therapy consists of control of inflammation with both topical and systemic agents. Symptomatic treatment with acetazolamide orally and grid laser photocoagulation have been shown to reduce cystoid macular oedema as well as vitrectomy.2 3 Treatment of cystoid macular oedema has been reported with goo...

This review focuses on the molecular stratagems utilized by bacteria, yeast, and mammals in their adaptation to hypoxia. Among this broad range of organisms, changes in oxygen tension appear to be sensed by heme proteins, with subsequent transfer of electrons along a signal transduction pathway which may depend on reactive oxygen species. These heme-based sensors are generally two-domain proteins. Some are hemokinases, while others are flavohemoproteins [flavohemoglobins and NAD(P)H oxidases]. H...

Twelve subjects with macular edema in retinal vein occlusion received hyperbaric oxygen treatment. Median visual acuity improved from 20/100 to 20/25 (p = 0.002). Clinically significant improvement (2 lines or more) was achieved in 10 cases (83%). Evaluation of the inward permeability coefficient of the blood-retinal barrier using vitreous fluorophotometry showed no significant alteration in the permeability. Studies of larger groups of vein occlusion patients are required to better understand a...

: It has been reported that hyperbaric oxygen treatment improves visual function in patients with chronic macular edema associated with retinal vein occlusion. This study was designed to investigate relationship between visual prognosis and characteristics of macular edema. From fluorescein angiography performed prior to the therapy, areas of capillary closure and fluorescein leakages were quantitatively evaluated within 1 disc diameter from the fovea. In 27 eyes for which good angiograms were a...

AbstractCarbon monoxide poisoning is the leading cause of poisoning deaths in the US, and published reports of carbon monoxide related morbidity and mortality can vary widely. Common morbidity involves myocardial and/or neurologic injury including delayed neurologic sequelae. The pathophysiology of this entity is complex, involving hypoxic stress on the basis of interference with oxygen transport to the cells and possibly impairing electron transport. Carbon monoxide can also affect leukocytes, ...

Summary Purpose The objective of this study was to prospectively assess the effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on diabetic retinopathy lesions and macular edema in patients undergoing the treatment for diabetic foot ulcers. Methods We compared two groups: a first group including 25 patients with non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy treated by HBOT for foot ulcers, and a second group (control group) composed of 25 patients with diabetic retinopathy who did not receive HBOT. The HBOT pro...
