The syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) is occasionally seen after hypothalamic injury or dysfunction, although it typically occurs in association with other endocrine disturbances. It is has never been described as a presenting feature of a suprasellar arachnoid cyst (SAC) in the pediatric population. The authors describe the case of an enlarging SAC resulting in SIADH as the only presenting feature, with an otherwise normal hypothalamic-pituitary axis. An SAC was d...

Purpose: To report a case of compressive optic neuropathy due to breast cancer metastasis to the periorbital lesion 26 years after the treatment of primary cancer. Case summary: A 64-year-old female presented with headache, facial pain and visual disturbance in her left eye for four months. The patient had received chemotherapy and radiotherapy after left breast modified radical mastectomy for invasive ductal carcinoma 26 years previously, and right breast wide resection with axillary dissection...

Surgical options for suprasellar arachnoid cyst are cystoperitoneal shunt, craniotomy fenestration and endoscopic fenestration. Endoscopic management has been found to be safe and effective. We report our experience with endoscopic management in 12 (male five, female seven; age range 8 months to 42 years) patients with suprasellar arachnoid cyst. The endoscopic procedure included lateral ventricle puncture by precoronal burr hole and superior and inferior wall of the cyst was communicated with t...

Abstract An 18-year-old man experienced progressive decreased visual acuity associated with a redness of the right eye for 1 month. An arachnoid cyst was identified within the right cavernous sinus and fenestration to the basal cistern was performed with the aid of a neuroendoscope. Visual acuity improved dramatically after the operation. Intracavernous sinus arachnoid cyst is a rare congenital intracranial lesion and surgical decompression may benefit symptomatic patients.

Objective This article, based on the Early Manifest Glaucoma Trial (EMGT), provides prospective natural history data on progression of glaucomatous field defects in 3 of the most common glaucoma types. Design Cohort of EMGT patients randomized to the untreated control group and followed up to the time of progression, when treatment could be initiated. Participants We evaluated 118 control patients: 46 with high-tension glaucoma (HTG), 57 with normal-tension glaucoma (NTG), and 15 with pseudoexfo...

Purpose: To report a case of a 9-year-old girl who complained of a floater symptom due to preretinal hemorrhage, subdural hemorrhage and arachnoid cyst. Case summary: A 9-year-old girl presented to our clinic with floater symptom in her right eye and a headache. Her corrected visual acuities were 20/20 in both eyes. Preretinal hemorrhage around the optic disc in both eyes was observed. Brain MRI revealed subdural hemorrhage on the frontal, temporal, and parietal lobes, and the arachnoid cyst in ...

PURPOSE. Restoration of visual function after neurosurgery for parachiasmal tumors is variable and unpredictable. The current study was conducted to determine whether in vivo retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness measurements predict the visual recovery of such patients. METHODS. Forty patients undergoing surgical resection of parachiasmal lesions were prospectively assessed before surgery with a neuro-ophthalmic examination, involving standard automated visual field (VF) testing and optica...

Arachnoid cysts are non-tumorous intra-arachnoid fluid collections that account for about 1% of all intracranial space-occupying lesions. In this article, we review the current concepts about these lesions and discuss the treatment alternatives. The aetiology of arachnoid cysts has been a controversial subject. They are regarded as developmental abnormality of the arachnoid, originating from a splitting or duplication of this membrane. The establishment of a single CSF space, by surgically commu...
