A simple method for measuring the Young's modulus of thermoplastic polymers at the nanoscale is proposed. Nanoindentation tests have been carried out on three polymers (ABS, PET and PP) using the Berkovich indenter tip. The elasticity moduli obtained from the reduced moduli thanks to the slope of the initial part of the discharge curve were greater than the real moduli of these polymers. For this, a simple method is proposed to minimize the error made on the determination of the modulus which is...

The effect of grain refiner on microstructural features, casting defects, formation of precipitates and eutectic Si particles, which influence the hardness and tensile properties of Al-Si alloys, is investigated in this study. The A-7Si alloy was prepared through melting and casting route with varying wt.% of Ti up to 0.2%. XRD, SEM and HRTEM analyses characterize the phases and aluminide (TiAl3 and Ti7Al5Si12) precipitates. The thermodynamic analysis, carried out by using FactSage software, con...

This study is focused on the determination of the effects of processing time and temperature on the thickness, morphology, and hardness of boride layers grown on AISI 304L stainless steels. For boriding, a new molten salt electrolysis method called as CRTD-Bor (Cathodic Reduction and Thermal Diffusion-based boriding) was chosen due to its fast and green nature. CRTD-Bor of AISI 304L substrates was carried out in a borax-based molten electrolyte at temperatures ranging from 950 to 1050 °C for per...

Using the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys for the laser melting processes is a challenge due to the formation of hot cracks and pores in the fusion zone. This challenge can be solved by refining the grains, which was achieved in this study. The investigated alloy was modified with 0.5Ti + 0.1B and various Zr concentrations. The microstructure and hardness were studied in the as-cast and pulsed laser melt states (PLM). In the as-cast state, the grains size was reduced 12 times due to forming TiB2 and Al3(Ti, ...

A dense Cu-10Sn alloy bulk specimen was obtained by optimizing the laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) processing, and the relative density of the specimen reached 99.7%. The grain morphology was mainly the columnar dendrite and inter-dendritic phases generated along the solidification direction. Tensile testing and detailed microstructural characterization were carried out on specimens in the as-built and heat-treated condition. Under the quasi-static tensile condition, the yield strength (σ0.2), u...

The present study aims to reveal behaviors of leaded brass as it is exposed to the synergetic effect of corrosion and cavitation erosion. The specimens were submerged in seawater for ultrasonic cavitation erosion experiments. The cumulative mass loss, surface microstructure and three-dimensional surface morphology were analyzed to characterize the time-dependent damage of the specimens. For comparison, cavitation erosion in deionized water was investigated. The results show that the mass loss of...
The electrochemical behavior of titanium (Ti) was investigated before and after anodic polarization at different potentials in simulated seawater solutions. The results showed that the Ti anodically polarized at 3.2 V was much more stable than those at 0.5 V and the open-circuit potential (OCP), and the passive film formed at the low potentials could be transformed to a more protective film after polarization at the high potential. The polarization at the high anodic potential could effectively ...
The mechanical behaviors and microstructural characteristics of three twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) steels prepared using directional solidification at withdrawal rates of 3, 8, and 15 µms−1 (abbreviated as DS3, DS8, and DS15, respectively) were investigated. The results showed that all the samples solidified steadily in a cellular growth mode. The dendrite spacing decreased on increasing the withdrawal rate, but eliminated grains resulted from increased growth competition. At a low strain ...

The corrosion behavior and microstructure of Mg-3Zn-1Mn-xSr (x = 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 wt.%) alloys are investigated by optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), electrochemical tests and immersion experiments equipped with a dynamic corrosion device. The introduction of Sr element changes the distribution of Mg7Zn3 phase in the Mg-3Zn-1Mn alloy, promoting its precipitation at the grain boundary. Decrease in grain size and second phase spacing can be observed with the increase...
