Abstract null null The microstructure and mechanical properties of joints between Al-Cu and Al-Mg aluminum alloys using bobbin tool friction stir welding (BT-FSW) were studied. The joints were fabricated for different material configurations at various welding speeds. Results show that there are no detectable defects when the soft Al-Mg alloy is placed on the advancing side (AS). It was found that some hard-oriented grains in the stir zone on the Al-Cu side remain unchanged. In addition, the dev...

Abstract null null The heat treatment behaviour of metal injection moulded (MIM) and wrought alloy 718 was investigated using DSC, microscopy and hardness measurements. Reheating solutionized samples in the DSC resulted in a distinct exothermic peak around 725 °C, which was attributed to γ" precipitation. This was followed by a broad endothermic region (~750-900 °C), which was attributed to the dissolution of γ' and γ" precipitates. No DSC peak was observed corresponding to γ' precipitation upon...

Abstract null null In this study, the microstructure evolution of solution-treated Mg 9Y alloy during high strain rate deformation was systematically investigated. Abundant deformation bands were formed to subdivide the grain. Abstract null null Various titanium alloys (Ti-Al-Fe-Si, VT3-1, Ti-62222S, and Ti-64) were prepared to investigate the effect of the prior β grain size on the kinetics of α'-martensitic transformation. The prior β grain size was controlled using various solution treatments (740–960 °C). Electron backscattering diffraction, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and field-emission transmission electron microscopy techniques were used to determine the volume fraction, composition, and grain size of the p...

Abstract null null MYRRHA (Multi-purpose hYbrid Research Reactor for High-tech Applications) is an accelerator driven system, currently under development at SCK CEN in Mol, Belgium. This nuclear system will use liquid Lead-Bismuth eutectic alloy as a spallation target for fast neutron production and as coolant. The ideal structural material for a liquid metal cooled reactor should be unsusceptible to both liquid metal embrittlement and liquid metal corrosion, while possessing high toughness. Nuc...

Abstract null null In this study, AZ31 magnesium alloy plates with fine grained microstructure were processed by cold dynamic extrusion followed by low temperature annealing. The corresponding microstructure evolution and mechanical properties were systematically investigated, with a great emphasis on the effect of high {10−12} extension twin density. Profuse {10–12} extension twin and nanograined structure was generated in various regions after 20% cold dynamic extrusion. Thus, pre-twinning gre...

Abstract null null Mg-14Li-(0, 2, 4, 6)Sn alloys were prepared. Effect of Sn alloying and cold rolling on microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg 14Li alloy have been studied. It is found that the introduction of Sn into Mg 14Li alloy effectively promotes the grain refinement and columnar-to-equiaxed grain transition (CET). The alloys contain three kinds of compounds, Mg2Sn, MgLi2Sn and Li13Sn5. Mg2Sn is mainly distributed at the grain boundaries, MgLi2Sn is mainly distributed on the stac...

Abstract null null The texture and microstructure variation through thickness of hot-rolled sheets can inherit to the final recrystallized sheets in silicon steels, thereby affecting final magnetic properties. A systematic study on the evolution of shear textures in hot-rolled sheets is of great importance for controlling and improving the magnetic properties of industrial products. The relationship between the initial {100} textures in cast slabs with columnar grains and the shear textures deve...
