Abstract To enhance the interface bonding performance between jute fibers (JFs) and polypropylene (PP), nano-SiO2 (n-SiO2 ) layers were coated on the carboxymethyl treated JFs (JFs-COOH). Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, microscopic modelling and macroscopic tensile test were used to study the interface structure and failure behaviors of n-SiO 2@JF/PP composites at multi-scale level. The results of MD simulation indicated that n-SiO2 layer including gel and array formed an interphase between ...

Abstract In this paper, novel beam-like mechanical metamaterials (BLMMs) with different flexural rigidities in two directions are proposed. The BLMMs are composed of the rigid parts and the flexible parts, showing totally different flexural rigidities in rigid and flexible directions. The BLMMs exhibit quite small flexural rigidities in the flexible direction and easy to be rolled up, large flexural rigidities in the rigid direction and hard to be deformed. The rigid part is composed of the holl...

Abstract In order to capture all essential details of fibers and yarns in woven fabric under ballistic impact, this paper firstly presents a multi-scale modeling technique to simulate the woven fabric involving fiber bundles and yarns. The woven fabric was modeled through three methods including meso-scale at the yarn level and multi-scale including fiber bundles. For two multi-scale models, in the local region of the fabric, primary yarns were computationally represented using fiber bundles wit...

Abstract To systematically and comprehensively investigate the in-plane compression behavior of star-triangular honeycomb (STH) under quasi-static load, a group of specimens were fabricated by additive manufacturing technology and a compression test was carried out. The results show that the deformation of STH is stable, and negative Poisson’s ratio (NPR) effect is obvious in the 1-direction. However, this effect is weakened in the 2-direction. Subsequently, numerical simulation models were esta...

Abstract Filament-wound cylinder always demonstrates diverse performances due to the different designed parameters. This paper aims to provide a hybrid method for optimizing the winding angle and fiber volume content of a composite cylinder under internal pressure considering the stability of strength ratio. The analytical model of the composite cylinder under internal pressure is established firstly based on the three-dimension (3D) elastic theory. Then, the local sensitivities for winding angl...

Abstract In this paper, dynamic stability analysis is carried out for a rotating tapered cantilever beam made of bi-directional functionally graded (BDFG) materials with time-dependent rotating velocity. Rayleigh-Ritz method is employed to obtain the eigenfrequencies and mode shapes of the beam. Hamilton’s principle and the Galerkin method are adopted to establish the equation of motion with periodic coefficients . Dynamic instability problem due to the periodic rotating velocity is solved by Bo...

Abstract The potential for lightweighting of railway axles was investigated to primarily reduce the unsprung mass of a rail vehicle. The reduction of unsprung mass equates to an overall lighter train which will help to reduce track damage, energy consumption and total operating costs. This work was performed within the NEXTGEAR project which is ascribed under the Shift2Rail program. This paper focusses on the design of a composite railway axle as part of the “Wheelset of the future” Work Package...

Abstract This paper presents the three-dimensional analysis of laminated composite rectangular plates with general boundary and loading conditions using the strong sampling surfaces (SaS) formulation and the extended differential quadrature (EDQ) method proposed by the first author. The strong SaS formulation is based on the choice of SaS parallel to the middle surface and located at Chebyshev polynomial nodes to introduce the displacements of these surfaces as plate unknowns. This choice of unk...
